Introduction

Yes. Low cloud can effectively “draw” a spacecraft that is not really there. When a bright light source sits behind a patchy cloud layer, the cloud’s edges can become the apparent edges of a solid object. A witness may perceive a glowing disc, triangle, cigar shape or structured craft even though the only physical object is a distant light hidden behind moving cloud. This is a well-documented source of UFO reports because the human visual system naturally interprets sharp contrasts and partial outlines as complete objects.

Cloud shapes illustration 1 The effect is especially common at night, when distance cues are poor and cloud layers obscure the true source of illumination. Investigators have long noted that planets, aircraft lights and other bright sources viewed through haze, fog or moving cloud can appear as unfamiliar aerial objects. Project Blue Book specifically identified planets seen through haze, fog and moving cloud as a recurring cause of UFO reports. How cloud edges become perceived object edges

The key mechanism is simple: the eye tends to treat boundaries of brightness as boundaries of objects.

Imagine a bright light behind a broken cloud deck. Only part of the light is visible through a gap. The illuminated cloud edge forms a bright curve or straight line. Instead of seeing “light plus cloud”, an observer may unconsciously combine these elements into a single object with a defined shape.

Several factors reinforce the illusion:

  • Hidden context: the actual light source is partly concealed.
  • High contrast: illuminated cloud edges appear sharper than the surrounding sky.
  • Poor distance judgement: at night it is difficult to estimate how far away clouds or lights are.
  • Pattern completion: the brain fills in missing portions of a perceived object.

As cloud fragments drift, different parts of the light are revealed and concealed. This can make the apparent object seem to rotate, morph, pulse or split into multiple components. The perceived craft may appear to have windows, compartments or geometric structure even though the shape is changing entirely because of cloud movement.

Meteorological guidance notes that very low cloud can obscure known lights and aircraft lights, leaving only partial visual information available to an observer. Moon, aircraft and searchlight examples

The Moon behind broken cloud

The Moon is one of the most powerful generators of cloud-edge illusions because it is bright, distant and often partially obscured.

When ragged cloud crosses the Moon, only sections of the lunar disc may be visible. The cloud boundary can create the impression of a giant luminous object with a sharply defined lower edge, a flattened top, or a structured metallic outline. As the cloud moves, the apparent object may seem to manoeuvre even though the Moon itself remains fixed.

Witnesses sometimes report a hovering craft that changes shape over several minutes. In many cases, the reported outline closely follows the changing cloud pattern rather than any independent motion.

Aircraft lights behind low cloud

Aircraft approaching the observer can be particularly deceptive. Landing lights are extremely bright and can remain nearly stationary in appearance when the aircraft is flying directly toward the witness.

If low cloud hides parts of the light, only fragments of the glow may be visible. The illuminated cloud edges can form apparent triangles, boomerangs or elongated craft shapes. As the aircraft changes position relative to gaps in the cloud, the shape may seem to transform dramatically.

The Met Office notes that low cloud can obscure aircraft lights while leaving other clues only intermittently visible. Searchlights and reflected beams

Ground-based searchlights can create some of the most striking false UFO forms.

When a searchlight beam strikes a low cloud base, the illuminated patch may appear as a bright hovering object. Irregular cloud edges can create geometric outlines that resemble structured vehicles. If the beam moves or sweeps across the cloud deck, the apparent object can accelerate rapidly, stop abruptly or execute impossible turns.

Because the “object” exists only as a moving patch of illumination on cloud, it can display motions that would be extraordinary for a physical craft.

Why the illusion can look convincing

A common misunderstanding is that such reports are merely cases of people “seeing a cloud”. In reality, witnesses are often responding to a genuine visual experience.

Several psychological factors increase credibility from the observer’s perspective:

  • The apparent shape may be clear and sharply defined.
  • The shape can persist for minutes rather than seconds.
  • Multiple witnesses may agree on the general form.
  • The object may appear brighter than surrounding clouds.
  • Movement of the cloud edge can mimic intelligent motion.

The result is a coherent perception of a solid aerial structure rather than a vague atmospheric effect.

This helps explain why some witnesses sincerely describe detailed spacecraft-like forms despite the absence of any solid object corresponding to the reported shape.

Signs the shape belongs to the cloud layer

Investigators look for clues that the apparent object is being generated by cloud rather than representing a separate craft.

Strong indicators include:

  • The outline changes continuously rather than remaining fixed.
  • Brightness varies with cloud thickness, becoming dimmer when cloud thickens and brighter when gaps open.
  • The object’s motion matches cloud drift or wind direction.
  • Different observers report different shapes from different locations.
  • The apparent structure dissolves gradually instead of departing as a discrete object.
  • No stable silhouette remains once the light source becomes fully visible.

Another useful clue is that the perceived object’s edges often look unusually soft or diffuse when viewed through binoculars or cameras. A true solid object typically maintains a consistent outline, whereas a cloud-generated shape shifts as the cloud itself evolves.

What this means for UFO investigations

Low-cloud edge effects are significant because they can create reports that seem more compelling than simple misidentifications of stars or planets. The witness may genuinely see a disc, triangle or structured form in the sky. The error lies not in the observation but in the interpretation of what created the shape.

Historical UFO investigations repeatedly found that atmospheric obscuration can transform ordinary lights into extraordinary-looking objects. Project Blue Book noted that planets viewed through haze, fog and moving cloud frequently generated UFO reports, illustrating how cloud layers can alter perceived shape and behaviour. For investigators, the central question is whether the reported object’s boundaries belong to a physical craft or to the cloud layer itself. When the apparent shape grows, shrinks and changes with the cloud, the evidence points toward a visual construction created by obscuration rather than a structured vehicle moving independently through the sky.
