Introduction
Aircraft navigation lights are designed to prevent collisions, not to make every aircraft instantly recognisable to someone on the ground. A distant aeroplane may be displaying the correct red, green, white and flashing anti-collision lights, yet still look like a mysterious hovering orb, a strangely coloured object, or a light that appears and disappears without explanation. In UFO reporting, this matters because witnesses often see only fragments of the lighting pattern rather than the complete arrangement that pilots and air traffic observers are trained to interpret.
The result is a recurring source of IFOs (identified flying objects): a real aircraft whose lighting system is visible, but whose shape, orientation and motion are hidden by distance, darkness, haze or viewing angle. What remains can look far less like an aircraft than aviation lighting designers intended. Why Distance and Angle Can Erase the Pattern
The aircraft-lighting code only works when enough of the pattern is visible. At long range, that assumption often fails.
A witness may see only one wingtip light because the aircraft is banked or approaching from an angle that hides the opposite side. The white tail light may be invisible because the aircraft is not oriented correctly relative to the observer. A bright strobe can dominate the view while the steady navigation lights disappear into atmospheric haze. Instead of a recognisable arrangement, the observer sees a single flashing point. How Blinking and Colour Changes Can Mislead Witnesses

A common UFO-style description involves a light that alternates between steady illumination and sudden flashes. Why a Head-On Aircraft Often Looks Least Like an Aircraft

When Human Perception Adds Another Layer of Confusion
The limitations of aircraft lighting are only part of the story. Human perception can amplify the ambiguity.

For UFO witnesses, the combination is powerful:
- A distant aircraft presents only a fragment of its lighting pattern.
- The aircraft body is invisible.
- The light appears nearly stationary.

The Practical UFO Clue
Aviation lights are highly standardised, yet distance often removes the very information they are designed to convey. A witness who sees a bright flashing white light, an isolated red or green glow, or a light that seems to change colour during a turn may actually be observing fragments of a normal aircraft lighting system rather than a single mysterious object.
In UFO investigations, this makes navigation lights and strobes an important diagnostic clue.
