Introduction
NASA’s 2023 Independent Study Team report did not set out to prove or disprove any particular UFO explanation. Instead, it highlighted a more basic problem: most unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) reports contain too little high-quality information to determine whether a strange object is a real external target, a sensor malfunction, or an optical artefact such as lens flare. The report repeatedly emphasised that poor calibration, missing metadata, limited sensor information and the absence of simultaneous observations make reliable analysis difficult. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportIn short, calibration ensures that future data gathered are reliable and accurate, while gatheri…
For claims involving lens flare and other optical artefacts, this finding is especially important. A flare explanation is often testable, but only if investigators know exactly how the image was captured and can compare it with independent measurements. Without that information, both sceptical and extraordinary interpretations can end up resting on incomplete evidence rather than demonstrable facts. Calibration and metadata missing from many clips
One of NASA’s central conclusions was that many UAP cases suffer from inadequate sensor calibration and incomplete metadata. Metadata includes information such as the recording time, camera model, sensor type, viewing direction, zoom setting, exposure parameters and other technical details needed to reconstruct what happened. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportIn short, calibration ensures that future data gathered are reliable and accurate, while gatheri… Wikisource This matters because optical artefacts are highly dependent on the imaging system. Internal reflections, sensor bloom, infrared glare and lens flare patterns all depend on the design and condition of the optics. Without knowing the characteristics of the recording device, investigators cannot confidently model whether an apparent object could have been generated by the camera itself. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportIn short, calibration ensures that future data gathered are reliable and accurate, while gatheri…
NASA’s report noted that some apparent UAP have later been shown to be sensor artefacts once calibration information and metadata were examined in sufficient detail. That observation is significant because it demonstrates that unexplained footage can sometimes move from “unknown” to “explained” when the underlying technical information becomes available. [Wikisource]en.wikisource.orgPage:UAP Independent Study TeamWikisourcePage:UAP Independent Study Team - Final Report.pdf/1512 Nov 2023 — Indeed, several apparent UAP have been demonstrated to be se…
The converse is also true. If metadata are absent, investigators may be unable to demonstrate that a suspected flare really is a flare. In that situation, the case often remains unresolved rather than conclusively explained.
Why simultaneous measurements help rule out artefacts
NASA repeatedly stressed the lack of multiple measurements in many UAP reports. A single video stream, especially one from an uncalibrated sensor, provides limited information about distance, size, speed and physical reality. Wikisource [nextgov]nextgov.comnasa report finds no evidence ufos are extraterrestrialNASA report finds no evidence that UFOs are extraterrestrial15 Sept 2023 — Analysis of this data is “hampered by poor sensor calibration… Optical artefacts are fundamentally camera-dependent phenomena. If an apparent object exists only inside one optical system, it should not normally appear in independent sensors observing the same scene. This is why simultaneous observations are so valuable.
For example:
- A lens flare visible in one camera should generally not appear in the same position in a second camera with different optics.
- A sensor reflection seen in infrared imagery may not appear in radar data.
- A genuine external object is more likely to generate correlated observations across multiple instruments.
NASA noted that the ideal evidence package would combine optical imagery, infrared observations and radar measurements, yet very few reported cases contain all three. The absence of these overlapping data streams makes it much harder to distinguish between a real object and an imaging artefact. Investigators can only apply rigorous tests when data collection standards require multiple sensors and synchronised records from the outset. NASA’s recommendations therefore focused heavily on improving data acquisition rather than debating individual sightings. [NASA]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportIn short, calibration ensures that future data gathered are reliable and accurate, while gatheri…
Why a lack of baseline data creates confusion
Another problem identified by NASA is the lack of baseline data. Baseline data are ordinary observations collected under known conditions that allow analysts to recognise what normal sensor behaviour looks like. [Wikisource]en.wikisource.orgResponses to Statement of TaskUnidentified Anomalous Phenomena: Independent…14 Oct 2023 — Indeed, several apparent UAP have been demonstrated to be sensor artifacts…
In optical artefact investigations, baseline information can include:
- How the camera behaves when pointed near bright lights.
- Known flare patterns for a particular lens.
- Typical infrared reflections generated by aircraft, clouds or the Sun.
- Sensor noise characteristics and processing artefacts.
Without these reference points, an unusual image can appear more mysterious than it really is. Analysts may know that a flare explanation is plausible but lack the comparative material needed to demonstrate it. NASA’s report therefore framed many UAP challenges as problems of data quality and context rather than simply a shortage of sightings. What better evidence packages would include
NASA’s recommendations point toward a more testable approach to optical artefact claims. Instead of relying on isolated clips circulating online, investigators would ideally receive a complete evidence package. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportIn short, calibration ensures that future data gathered are reliable and accurate, while gatheri…
Such a package would include:
- Original, uncompressed image or video files.
- Full metadata from the recording device.
- Calibration information for the sensor.
- Precise time and location records.
- Information about weather and viewing conditions.
- Simultaneous observations from additional sensors or observers.
- Access to the recording platform’s technical specifications.
With these elements available, investigators can perform reconstruction exercises, model flare geometries, compare observations across instruments and determine whether a reported object behaves like an external target or an artefact generated by the imaging system. The practical lesson for flare claims
NASA’s UAP study did not conclude that unidentified sightings are merely lens flares. Nor did it conclude that unusual videos represent extraordinary objects. Its more restrained conclusion was that current evidence is often insufficient to make either case convincingly. Most reports provide too little calibrated, contextualised data for definitive analysis. For optical artefact claims, the lesson is straightforward: the strongest way to test a flare hypothesis is not argument but data. When original files, calibration records, metadata and independent measurements are available, suspected artefacts can often be confirmed or rejected. When those elements are missing, uncertainty tends to persist, leaving many cases in the category that NASA regarded as the central challenge of UAP research: not necessarily unexplained phenomena, but inadequately documented ones.
