Introduction
A UFO video can look compelling while still providing almost no reliable information about an object’s distance, size, or speed. This problem is especially common in recordings made against open sky, clouds, haze, or the ocean. When a viewer cannot tell whether an object is hundreds of metres away or tens of kilometres distant, estimates of its motion become highly uncertain. In many cases, dramatic claims about acceleration or extraordinary speed arise not from what the object is doing, but from the absence of visual references needed to judge range accurately. Analyses of military and civilian UFO footage repeatedly show that missing distance cues are one of the main reasons ordinary objects can appear extraordinary. Within the broader category of parallax and motion errors, the key issue is simple: apparent movement across a screen does not reveal true speed unless the object’s distance is known.
Why Range Is Hard to Judge in Featureless Scenes
Human vision normally estimates distance using multiple cues. Buildings, trees, terrain, roads, shadows, and other familiar objects help the brain construct a sense of scale. Remove those references and distance perception becomes far less reliable.
A small balloon one kilometre away and a large aircraft ten kilometres away can occupy similar portions of a video frame. Without contextual landmarks, viewers may unconsciously choose the wrong distance and then calculate an incorrect size or speed from that assumption.
The problem becomes even more severe in heavily zoomed footage. Zoom magnifies the target but often removes surrounding scenery that would otherwise provide context. A viewer may see only a dark object against a pale sky and have no practical way to determine whether it is nearby and slow or distant and fast. Investigators therefore treat range information as one of the most valuable pieces of data in any UFO case. When range is unavailable, confidence in speed estimates drops sharply. This limitation is not unique to UFO reports. Aviation safety research has long documented how featureless visual environments reduce a pilot’s ability to judge distance, altitude, and motion accurately. The same perceptual weaknesses affect people analysing videos after the fact. How Clouds and Horizons Mislead Scale Estimates
Clouds often look like useful reference points, but they can be deceptive. Their distance is rarely obvious, their shapes constantly change, and different cloud layers may exist at vastly different altitudes.
When an object appears to pass “behind” or “through” clouds, viewers sometimes interpret this as proof of enormous size or distance. Yet unless the cloud layer’s position is known, the geometry can be ambiguous. A nearby object crossing in front of distant clouds may create visual impressions that are difficult to distinguish from a faraway object moving within the cloud layer itself.
Haze introduces another source of error. Aviation guidance notes that atmospheric haze can make objects appear farther away than they really are, while unusually clear conditions can create the opposite impression. These effects can distort intuitive judgments of both distance and speed. [boldmethod.com]boldmethod.com8 Optical Illusions Pilots Should Understand And Know…Apr 19, 2025 — According to the FAA, "atmospheric haze can create an illusion of…
Even the horizon can be misleading. Over open water, the visible horizon provides orientation but contributes little information about the range of an airborne object. A target that appears just above the horizon could be relatively close and low, or extremely distant and high. The visual geometry alone may not distinguish between those possibilities.
Why Ocean Videos Create Special Problems
Ocean-based UFO videos are particularly vulnerable to distance errors because water removes many of the cues normally used to judge scale.
Unlike a landscape containing roads, buildings, or mountains, the sea surface often appears as a largely uniform texture stretching to the horizon. The result is a scene with very few fixed reference points.
Aviation literature describes related “featureless terrain” and over-water visual illusions in which the absence of nearby landmarks degrades depth perception and range estimation. Pilots operating over water are specifically trained to recognise that distance and altitude judgments become less reliable when visual references disappear. For UFO analysis, this means that an object skimming above the ocean can appear much faster than it actually is. If observers underestimate the object’s distance, they may dramatically overestimate its speed. Conversely, a distant object moving at substantial speed can appear strangely slow because its angular position changes only slightly.
The ocean horizon also creates a powerful psychological anchor. Viewers often assume that any object appearing near the horizon must be close to the water surface. In reality, without accurate range information, apparent height above the horizon can be highly deceptive.
The GOFAST Case and the Importance of Known Distance
One of the most discussed examples is the U.S. Navy’s GOFAST video. To many viewers, the object appears to race just above the ocean at remarkable speed.
However, later analyses focused heavily on geometry rather than visual impressions. The crucial factor was that the aircraft’s sensor display included range and aircraft-state information. Using those data, analysts could estimate altitude and constrain possible speeds instead of relying on intuition alone. The Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) concluded that the available information allowed a conventional analysis of the object’s motion and that the dramatic appearance of speed was influenced by viewing geometry and distance-related effects. [AARO]aaro.milGo Fast Case ResolutionAAROAARO GoFast Case ResolutionFebruary 24, 2025 — 6 Feb 2025 — The video display provided sufficient information to assess the object's…
The GOFAST discussion illustrates a broader lesson: once reliable distance measurements become available, many seemingly extraordinary motion claims can be tested quantitatively rather than visually.
Reference Objects That Improve Speed Claims
The strongest UFO videos are not necessarily the most dramatic-looking. They are the ones that provide enough context to estimate distance and motion accurately.
Useful reference cues include:
- Terrain features with known dimensions.
- Buildings, towers, or ships of known size.
- Multiple camera viewpoints.
- Radar-derived range information. [aaro.mil]aaro.milGo Fast Case ResolutionAAROAARO GoFast Case ResolutionFebruary 24, 2025 — 6 Feb 2025 — The video display provided sufficient information to assess the object's…
- Sensor displays showing distance and viewing angles.
- Aircraft telemetry and flight data.
- Objects passing in front of or behind landmarks whose positions are known.
When such references are present, investigators can calculate angular motion, estimate range, and test whether reported speeds are physically plausible. Without them, apparent motion remains largely an impression rather than a measurement. What Empty Backgrounds Really Tell Us
A featureless sky or ocean background does not prove that a UFO is moving unusually fast, hovering impossibly, or performing advanced manoeuvres. It often means the opposite: the scene lacks the information needed to determine what the object is actually doing.
This is why experienced analysts treat videos against blank skies, distant cloud layers, or open water with caution. The less visual context a scene provides, the easier it becomes for ordinary objects to appear mysterious. Missing distance cues do not create a false object, but they can create a false impression of its speed, size, altitude, and behaviour.
