Introduction

One of the most common mistakes in UFO investigations is treating the absence of a flight track on a public website as evidence that no aircraft was present. In reality, public flight-tracking services are observational tools, not complete records of all air traffic. They depend on aircraft broadcasts, ground receiver networks, commercial data agreements, filtering policies, and platform-specific display rules. When any of those elements fail or are intentionally limited, an aircraft can disappear from the map while remaining physically present in the sky.

Missing Tracks illustration 1 This distinction matters because aircraft are among the most frequent conventional explanations for UFO reports. Investigators often use services such as Flightradar24, FlightAware, ADS-B Exchange, OpenSky and similar platforms to test whether a reported object could have been an aircraft. That approach is valuable, but a negative result is weaker evidence than many people assume. A missing track may reflect limitations in the tracking system rather than the presence of an unidentified object. Understanding those limitations is therefore essential for evaluating UFO claims fairly and avoiding false conclusions. Why a blank flight map does not prove an unknown object

Public flight-tracking systems are built on surveillance data rather than direct visual observation. Most modern tracking relies on ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast), a system in which aircraft broadcast their position, altitude, speed and identification. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration states that ADS-B Out transmits these data once per second, making it far more frequent than conventional radar updates. However, the chain between an aircraft broadcasting a signal and a user seeing a symbol on a public map contains multiple potential failure points:

  • The aircraft may not be broadcasting usable ADS-B data.
  • The signal may not reach a receiving station.
  • The receiving station may not feed the chosen platform.
  • The platform may deliberately filter or suppress the aircraft.
  • The displayed data may be delayed, anonymised or incomplete.

As a result, “nothing on the map” and “nothing in the sky” are not equivalent statements. In UFO discussions, that distinction is often overlooked.

The problem becomes especially significant when witnesses use only a single tracking service. Different platforms operate with different data sources, receiver networks and display policies. An aircraft missing from one service may appear on another. Reports from aviation enthusiasts routinely document aircraft visible on ADS-B Exchange but absent from Flightradar24 or FlightAware because of differing filtering practices and data-sharing arrangements. Receiver coverage can create invisible aircraft

A flight tracker can only display signals it receives. Although global ADS-B coverage has expanded dramatically, it remains uneven.

Ground-based ADS-B reception is fundamentally line-of-sight. Terrain, mountains, buildings, curvature of the Earth and low operating altitude can all reduce reception range. Aircraft flying low are particularly vulnerable to disappearing from public tracking because their transmissions may be blocked from distant receivers. Discussions among experienced ADS-B users frequently note that low-level aircraft can vanish from public maps when no nearby receiver is available. [Reddit]reddit.comWhy can't I see it on Flightradar24 when it flies past me?RedditWhy can't I see it on Flightradar24 when it flies past me?July 22, 2025 — If there just happens to be no ADS-B receiver "feeding" i…Published: July 22, 2025

This has direct relevance to UFO reports. Witnesses often report apparently mysterious lights near the horizon or at relatively low elevations. Those are precisely the situations where reception limitations become most significant. An aircraft approaching an airport, conducting training flights, following terrain, or operating at low altitude may be visible to observers yet poorly represented in public tracking datasets.

Research into ADS-B sensor networks has also shown that receiver coverage is not uniformly distributed. Academic studies of ADS-B infrastructure describe areas of dense sensor coverage and areas with comparatively sparse observation, meaning that surveillance quality varies geographically. In practical terms, an aircraft over a major metropolitan area may be tracked continuously, while a similar aircraft over remote countryside, mountains, deserts or offshore regions may generate fragmented or missing public tracks.

Filtering and deliberate non-display

One of the least appreciated reasons for missing tracks is that some aircraft are intentionally hidden.

Flightradar24 explicitly states that operators of certain aircraft may request restrictions on public display and notes that military aircraft are among the most common categories affected. The company also states that some military and government aircraft may be blocked entirely from public view. In the United States, the FAA’s Limiting Aircraft Data Displayed (LADD) programme allows aircraft owners to request that flight information be filtered from public dissemination through participating data providers. The FAA explains that participating vendors receiving FAA data are required to honour these restrictions. Consequently, the absence of an aircraft from a public map may reflect a policy decision rather than a tracking failure.

This issue is not limited to military operations. Government aircraft, law-enforcement platforms, sensitive flights and some private aircraft may be hidden, anonymised or partially obscured. Discussions surrounding high-profile private aircraft tracking have highlighted how some platforms remove or restrict specific aircraft while other services continue displaying them through independently collected ADS-B data. [WIRED]wired.comElon Musk and the Dangers of Censoring Real-Time Flight TrackersMusk claims that these trackers provide "assassination coordinates." Musk's campaign against sharing such data prompted warnings from the…

For UFO investigators, this creates an important risk. A witness may observe a genuine aircraft while simultaneously finding no corresponding track on a preferred public service. The resulting mismatch can appear mysterious even though it arises from data-display policies.

Missing Tracks illustration 2

Military aircraft are a recurring source of confusion

Military aviation deserves special attention because it appears repeatedly in UFO investigations.

Many witnesses assume that military aircraft should always appear on tracking sites if they are transmitting. In practice, visibility varies significantly. Some military transports, tankers and support aircraft appear routinely, while others are hidden, filtered or intermittently visible. Flightradar24 specifically notes that military aircraft are among the categories most likely to be restricted. [Flightradar24]forum.flightradar24.com213175 usa military aircraft not showing up on mapMilitary aircraft not showing up on map26 Apr 2022 — I frequently see military aircraft flying overhead. Only occasionally does it show u…

In addition, military aircraft may operate in ways that reduce public visibility. Aviation observers frequently report low-level training flights, tactical operations and aircraft that appear visually but do not generate consistent public tracks. Discussions among ADS-B users cite military aircraft operating without visible tracking information despite being directly observed. [Reddit]reddit.commilitary jets not showing on radarRedditMilitary jets not showing on radar?: r/ADSBSeptember 1, 2023 — I live in between two mountains in Va. we regularly have military j…Published: September 1, 2023

This does not imply secrecy in every case. Rather, it demonstrates that public tracking platforms are not designed as comprehensive military surveillance systems. A witness seeing unusual lights, high-performance manoeuvres, formation flights or aircraft operating at night may encounter gaps in publicly available data even when the explanation remains entirely conventional.

Because military aircraft often use powerful landing lights, infrared signatures, unusual flight profiles and formation operations, they already possess characteristics that can trigger UFO reports. Missing tracking data can further reinforce the mistaken perception that the object was not an aircraft.

Delays, interruptions and incomplete tracks

Even when an aircraft normally appears on a tracking service, its track may not be continuous.

Flightradar24 notes that aircraft can disappear temporarily when the platform is unable to receive the signal. Such interruptions may result from reception problems, coverage limitations or data interruptions. [Flightradar24 Support center]support.fr24.com3000117426 why is some aircraft information limited or not visibleis some aircraft information limited or not visible?10 Apr 2026 — High-profile aircraft, like Air Force One, are not displayed. Military…

A witness reviewing a sighting after the fact may therefore encounter a misleading picture. An aircraft that was present during the observation period may leave only a fragmented track or no track at the critical moment.

This can become especially problematic when investigators rely on screenshots rather than complete historical datasets. A single snapshot captures only what was displayed at that instant. It may omit aircraft that appeared moments earlier, aircraft whose data arrived later, or aircraft whose tracks were reconstructed differently by another service.

The result is a subtle but important evidential trap: the map appears precise, yet the underlying dataset may be incomplete.

Why platform comparisons matter

Different flight-tracking platforms do not show the same airspace.

Some services rely heavily on FAA-distributed information and associated filtering rules. Others emphasise direct collection of ADS-B broadcasts from independent receiver networks. ADS-B Exchange, for example, markets itself as a source of direct aircraft tracking data and has historically distinguished itself through limited filtering compared with some competitors. [ADS-B Exchange]globe.adsbexchange.comAD S-B ExchangeADS-B Exchange - track aircraft liveADS-B Exchange - track aircraft live - aircraft flight history… [ADS-B Exchange]globe.adsbexchange.comAD S-B ExchangeADS-B Exchange - track aircraft liveADS-B Exchange - track aircraft live - aircraft flight history…

For UFO investigations, checking multiple platforms is often more informative than relying on a single source. An aircraft absent from one service may appear on another because of differences in:

  • Receiver coverage.
  • Data-sharing agreements. [wired.com]wired.comElon Musk and the Dangers of Censoring Real-Time Flight TrackersMusk claims that these trackers provide "assassination coordinates." Musk's campaign against sharing such data prompted warnings from the…
  • Filtering policies.
  • Historical archive quality.
  • Track reconstruction methods.

A missing track therefore has far less evidential weight when only one source has been consulted.

Missing Tracks illustration 3

How to avoid overclaiming a missing track

The most defensible approach is to treat public flight data as evidence, not proof.

When a UFO report coincides with an empty flight map, investigators should ask several questions before concluding that no aircraft was present:

  1. Which tracking services were checked?
  2. Were historical records reviewed or only live displays?
  3. Was the sighting near terrain, coastline or low-altitude airspace where reception might be weaker?
  4. Could military, government or restricted aircraft plausibly be operating in the area?
  5. Was the observation close to an airport, military range or training route?
  6. Are there radar, airport, air-traffic-control or official records beyond public ADS-B services?

A stronger conclusion emerges only when multiple independent datasets fail to reveal a plausible aircraft and when the limitations of those datasets have been considered.

The key lesson for UFO investigations

Flight-tracking tools are among the most valuable resources available to UFO investigators because they frequently identify ordinary aircraft behind seemingly unusual sightings. Yet their greatest weakness is often misunderstood. Public maps create an impression of completeness that the underlying data cannot always support.

A blank map may indicate that no aircraft was present. It may also indicate poor receiver coverage, low-altitude operations, signal interruptions, military activity, privacy filtering, government restrictions, delayed data or platform-specific display choices. Because all of those possibilities are well documented, the absence of a visible flight track should be treated as an investigative clue rather than evidence of an unidentified object. In UFO cases, some of the most persuasive-looking mysteries begin not with an unknown craft in the sky, but with an incomplete dataset on the ground.
