Introduction

Many UFO reports describe a row of bright lights that appear to hover for several minutes and then vanish one by one without accelerating away. In a significant number of cases involving military training areas, this pattern is consistent with illumination flares rather than a structured craft. The crucial point is that the lights do not need to move dramatically to disappear. They can simply burn out, descend behind a ridgeline, or pass behind a cloud layer that is invisible to the observer at night. When several flares are released in sequence, these disappearances often occur in sequence as well, creating the impression that individual lights on a single object are being switched off. This mechanism has been documented repeatedly in investigations of flare-related UFO reports, including analyses of the later phase of the Phoenix Lights event. Burnout versus apparent departure

A flare is a temporary light source. Unlike an aircraft, it is not expected to remain illuminated indefinitely. Military illumination flares are designed to burn for a limited period while descending slowly beneath a parachute. As the flare approaches the end of its burn, its brightness may fluctuate before disappearing entirely. To a distant observer with no depth cues, that extinction can look like a light suddenly departing, cloaking itself, or switching off. [Wikipedia]WikipediaPhoenix LightsPhoenix Lights

At night, estimating distance is notoriously difficult. A bright flare tens of kilometres away may appear much closer than it really is. If observers cannot judge the flare’s range, they may also misjudge its motion. A flare that is slowly descending can appear stationary, and when it finally goes dark the brain may interpret the disappearance as an action rather than a simple loss of illumination. This distinction matters because witness testimony often focuses on the final moments of a sighting. Reports such as “it hovered for several minutes and then vanished” are frequently presented as evidence of unusual behaviour, yet the same description is exactly what would be expected from a bright flare reaching the end of its burn cycle. Terrain and cloud-line disappearances

The most deceptive flare disappearances occur when the light remains illuminated but is gradually hidden by geography or weather.

Hills and mountain ridges

When flares descend behind a distant ridge, observers cannot usually see the terrain silhouette clearly at night. The mountain or hill may be effectively invisible, leaving only the lights visible against the sky. As each flare sinks below the ridgeline, it appears to blink out abruptly even though it is still burning. The Phoenix Lights provide a well-known example. Investigators who favoured the flare explanation for the later 10 p.m. lights argued that the apparent disappearances matched the geometry of illumination flares descending behind the Sierra Estrella mountains southwest of Phoenix. Analyses noted that the lights vanished in a pattern consistent with terrain occultation rather than with a single object departing. Later recordings of known flare drops produced remarkably similar visual sequences. [Phoenix New Times]phoenixnewtimes.comPhoenix New TimesThe 1997 "Phoenix Lights" are no mysteryMar 14, 2014 — The “disappearance” was actually the lights dropping behind the S…

The key observational clue is that the lights tend to disappear at slightly different times while maintaining roughly the same horizontal positions. That behaviour is expected if multiple flares are descending behind the same ridgeline but is harder to reconcile with a single rigid object moving as a unit. Marine layers, haze and cloud decks

Cloud can create the same effect. A flare viewed through thin haze or a low cloud layer often dims gradually before vanishing. If different flares are at slightly different altitudes, they can enter the obscuring layer at different moments.

Observers may not even realise cloud is present. Thin marine layers, smoke, or high haze can be nearly invisible at night except where they interact with bright lights. A flare can therefore seem to fade into empty sky rather than disappear into weather. This is especially common near coastlines and military training ranges where low cloud decks frequently form after sunset. Why sequential fading looks structured

The reason these disappearances are so persuasive is that the human visual system tends to organise separate lights into a single object.

If several flares are released in a line, each may:

  • Appear stationary because of distance.
  • Drift slowly at similar rates under parachutes.
  • Reach a ridgeline or cloud boundary at slightly different times.
  • Disappear in a repeating sequence.

To a witness, that sequence can resemble lights mounted on the underside of a large craft. Rather than seeing five independent lights fading for independent reasons, the observer may perceive five components of one object being extinguished in a deliberate pattern. [Phoenix New Times]phoenixnewtimes.comPhoenix New TimesThe 1997 "Phoenix Lights" are no mysteryMar 14, 2014 — The “disappearance” was actually the lights dropping behind the S…

This effect is amplified when the terrain itself is invisible. Without seeing the mountain ridge that blocks the view, there is no obvious reason for the lights to vanish one after another. The brain therefore searches for an alternative explanation and often attributes the pattern to intelligent control. What investigators look for

When assessing a report involving lights that hover and then disappear, investigators look for several specific indicators of flare-related fade-outs:

  • The lights remain in approximately the same area of sky for several minutes.
  • Individual lights disappear one at a time rather than simultaneously.
  • The disappearances occur along a consistent horizontal line corresponding to terrain or cloud.
  • Military training activity, bombing ranges, or flare exercises were occurring in the region.
  • Video recordings show gradual descent before disappearance when analysed frame by frame. None of these clues alone proves a flare explanation. However, when multiple indicators appear together, the pattern strongly matches known illumination-flare behaviour. The resulting UFO report is often based on a genuine observation of bright aerial lights, but the dramatic “wink out” sequence can be explained by ordinary line-of-sight effects rather than by a craft suddenly vanishing.
