Introduction

One of the most common ways ordinary objects become “impossible” UFOs is through a simple error in judging distance. If an observer does not know how far away an object is, they cannot reliably estimate its size, speed, altitude, or acceleration. A small object nearby can appear identical to a large object far away, especially at night, against a featureless sky, or in a short video clip. Once the range is wrong, every other estimate built on that range can also become wrong. What seems like a huge craft crossing the horizon at extraordinary speed may actually be a nearby insect, bird, balloon, drone, or aircraft moving through a much smaller volume of space. Investigators therefore treat range as one of the most important missing variables in UFO analysis. Modern UAP studies likewise emphasise the need for calibrated measurements, multiple sensors, and geometry that can establish distance rather than merely appearance. Why apparent size and speed depend on range

Human vision is surprisingly poor at estimating distance when there are few reference points. In everyday life, the brain relies on familiar objects, shadows, perspective, and stereoscopic depth cues. Many UFO sightings remove those cues entirely. A bright light against a dark sky may provide almost no information about how far away it is.

The result is a geometric ambiguity. A small object close to the observer can occupy exactly the same apparent size in the field of view as a much larger object farther away. Without independent range information, both possibilities fit the observation equally well.

Speed estimates suffer from the same problem. Observers usually judge motion by how quickly something moves across their field of view. However, angular motion is not the same as true speed. A nearby object moving modestly can sweep across a large angle of sky, while a distant object moving much faster may appear almost stationary. To convert apparent motion into real velocity, investigators must know the object’s distance. Without that measurement, dramatic speed estimates can be little more than guesses. [AARO]aaro.milAAROEffect of Forced Perspective and Parallax View on UAP…Under these conditions, an observer can misinterpret the apparent size and s…

This is why reports often contain statements such as:

  • “It crossed the sky in seconds.”
  • “It accelerated instantly.”
  • “It was enormous.”
  • “It moved faster than any aircraft.”

Those descriptions may be sincere, but they frequently depend on an assumed range that was never established.

Nearby-small versus distant-large confusions

Many UFO cases can be understood as a choice between two geometrically valid interpretations: a small nearby object or a large distant one.

Insects, birds, and debris near the camera

Video recordings create a particularly strong version of the problem. An insect flying close to a lens can appear as a large object moving at tremendous speed. Because the insect is only visible briefly and lacks recognisable features, viewers may assume it is far away and therefore much larger than it really is.

The same issue can affect birds, seeds, drifting debris, and airborne particles. If the camera operator assumes the object is kilometres away rather than metres away, its apparent velocity can increase by orders of magnitude.

Balloons and drones

Balloons are especially deceptive because they can appear stationary, drift unpredictably, and change brightness as they rotate. A small balloon at an unknown distance may be interpreted as a large structured craft. Drones introduce another layer of confusion because their lights can obscure their true shape and scale, particularly at night.

Without reliable distance measurements, witnesses may attribute extraordinary dimensions or manoeuvres to objects whose actual size is modest.

Aircraft viewed head-on

Aircraft approaching an observer can appear nearly motionless because most of their movement is directed toward the viewer rather than across the field of view. When the aircraft later changes angle, it may seem to accelerate suddenly even though its actual speed has remained relatively constant.

This effect has contributed to numerous reports in which conventional aircraft appeared to hover before making a dramatic departure.

How parallax creates the illusion of extreme speed

One of the most important mechanisms behind apparent high-speed UFO motion is parallax.

Parallax is the apparent displacement of an object when the observer moves. Anyone looking out of a moving vehicle has seen nearby objects race past while distant mountains seem almost fixed. The effect becomes more complicated when viewed from aircraft or through tracking cameras. [lco.global]lco.globalStellar ParallaxAstronomers use an effect called parallax to measure distances to nearby stars. Parallax is the apparent displacement of…

In a UFO context, a relatively slow object can appear to move rapidly across the landscape because the observing platform itself is moving. If analysts incorrectly assume the object is distant, the apparent motion can be interpreted as extraordinary velocity.

The U.S. Department of Defense’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) has specifically highlighted forced perspective and parallax as mechanisms that can cause observers to misjudge the apparent size and speed of aerial objects. According to AARO, these effects can create misleading impressions when range information is absent or incomplete. [AARO]aaro.milAAROEffect of Forced Perspective and Parallax View on UAP…Under these conditions, an observer can misinterpret the apparent size and s…

A well-known modern example is the debate surrounding the U.S. Navy’s “GoFast” video. The footage initially gave many viewers the impression of an object skimming rapidly above the ocean. Later analyses argued that much of the apparent speed resulted from geometry, viewing angle, and range assumptions rather than extraordinary performance. Why single-witness and single-camera cases are vulnerable

A single observer at a single location usually cannot measure range directly. Even experienced witnesses face this limitation.

The problem becomes especially severe when:

  • The observation is brief.
  • The object is seen at night.
  • The sky lacks reference points.
  • Only one camera records the event.
  • Camera metadata are unavailable.
  • The observer is also moving.

In these circumstances, multiple interpretations can remain compatible with the evidence. Investigators may be unable to determine whether the object was a small nearby target or a larger distant one.

This helps explain why some reports remain unresolved. The unresolved status does not necessarily indicate an extraordinary object. It may simply mean that the geometry needed to determine distance was never captured. Modern UAP reviews repeatedly identify missing sensor metadata, inadequate calibration, and insufficient measurement as major obstacles to resolving cases. What evidence can fix the geometry

Distance errors become much harder to sustain when independent measurements are available.

Multiple viewpoints

Two cameras observing the same object from different locations can use triangulation to estimate range. Once distance is known, investigators can calculate actual size, altitude, and speed instead of relying on appearance alone. Modern scientific UAP monitoring proposals place heavy emphasis on this approach. Radar and optical data together

Radar can provide range directly, while optical imagery supplies appearance and motion. When both datasets agree, estimates become far more reliable than visual observation alone.

Precise sensor metadata

Camera position, lens characteristics, zoom level, aircraft motion, and timestamp information allow analysts to reconstruct viewing geometry. NASA’s UAP study stressed the importance of calibrated sensors, multiple measurements, and complete metadata because these details help separate genuine anomalies from perceptual and geometric mistakes. The key lesson for UFO investigations

Range errors are a classic example of why insufficient data should not be confused with a genuinely unidentified object. A sighting may appear extraordinary because observers unknowingly assigned the wrong distance to what they saw. Once that distance assumption is corrected, estimates of size, speed, and manoeuvrability can change dramatically.

For investigators, the critical question is therefore not simply “What did it look like?” but “How far away was it?” Until that question is answered, a nearby small object and a distant large object may remain observationally indistinguishable, and the ordinary can easily masquerade as the extraordinary.
