According to the Federal Aviation Administration report later analysed by the U.S. All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), the sighting occurred on 9 October 2022 at approximately 3:50 a.m. local time. The aircraft was travelling eastbound near Gallup, New Mexico, at roughly 35,000 feet. The pilot described seeing “multiple lights moving in different directions” to the left of the constellation Leo. Investigators reconstructed the aircraft’s position, altitude, heading and viewing direction, then compared those conditions with the locations of Starlink satellites that could have produced specular reflections—brief flashes caused when sunlight reflects directly toward an observer. The analysis found that the geometry was highly favourable for visible Starlink flares. A key element of the reconstruction was the concept of an “effective observation point”. Because the aircraft was moving at high speed and viewing the sky from 35,000 feet, the relevant geometry differed from that of a stationary observer on the ground. The resulting explanation did not require satellites to physically change direction. Why the lights seemed to move in different directions

One of the most confusing aspects of the Gallup report was the impression that the lights were travelling in different directions. Satellite-flare geometry provides a straightforward explanation.

Starlink satellites occupy numerous orbital planes crossing the sky at different angles. When sunlight reflects from one satellite, the flare may appear in one position. Moments later, a different satellite in another orbit may brighten elsewhere. Because the observer mainly notices the brightening events rather than the dim satellites between them, the brain tends to connect the flashes into a pattern of moving objects. At aircraft altitude, this effect becomes more pronounced.
