Introduction

Reports from trained sensor operators often begin with a real anomaly: a track, heat source or moving point that does not immediately fit expectations. Yet the display itself can create misleading impressions of speed, direction and behaviour. In investigations of unidentified flying objects (IFOs), one of the most important lessons is that a surprising track is not the same thing as a surprising object. Modern military and aviation displays are powerful tools, but they compress a complex three-dimensional situation into simplified symbols, video feeds and tracking markers. As a result, even experienced operators can initially perceive extraordinary motion where later analysis finds ordinary causes such as parallax, perspective effects or missing range information. Why expert screens can still mislead

Training helps operators recognise unusual patterns, but expertise is applied through an interface rather than through direct observation. A radar scope, infrared targeting pod or airborne tracking display typically emphasises what the sensor can measure well while hiding information it cannot. Range, altitude, background wind, camera geometry and sensor limitations may not be obvious from the display itself. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportThe study of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) presents a unique scientific opportunity tha… [2U.S.]media.defense.govDOPSR 2024 0263 AARO HISTORICAL RECORD REPORT VOLUME 1 2024Department of WarAARO Historical Record Report Volume 18 Mar 2024 — In terms of military reporting, the sensors on which UAP most frequen… Department of War

This creates a recurring problem in UAP and UFO investigations. An operator may correctly identify that something appears unusual while still being unable to determine its true motion. NASA’s independent UAP study highlighted that many investigations are hindered by incomplete metadata, limited measurements and insufficient contextual information about the observing system. Without those details, apparent behaviour can be difficult to interpret reliably. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportThe study of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) presents a unique scientific opportunity tha…

Importantly, this does not imply incompetence. A skilled operator can accurately report what the display showed while the display itself presents an incomplete picture of physical reality.

What sensor displays leave out

Many displays present motion in two dimensions even when the underlying situation is three-dimensional. A target moving toward or away from the observer may appear almost stationary, while a slowly moving object can seem to race across the screen if viewed against a distant background.

Several missing cues commonly contribute to mistaken impressions:

  • True distance: A small nearby object and a large distant object can appear identical on a display.
  • Depth perception: Most sensor feeds provide little intuitive information about how far away a target is.
  • Background reference points: Featureless skies remove visual clues that humans normally use to judge motion.
  • Platform movement: Aircraft, drones and ships carrying the sensors are often moving rapidly themselves.
  • Display processing: Tracking software may stabilise, zoom or filter imagery in ways that alter visual intuition. NASA Science [wikisource]en.wikisource.orgResponses to Statement of TaskUnidentified Anomalous Phenomena: Independent…Oct 14, 2023 — Indeed, several apparent UAP have been demonstrated to be sensor artifact… A target can therefore appear to accelerate, stop or change direction dramatically even when its actual movement is relatively ordinary.

The difference between a track and an object

Operators frequently work with symbols, markers or computer-generated tracks rather than continuously observing a physical object. A track represents the system’s estimate of where something is, not necessarily a complete description of what it is doing.

Track-management software can merge detections, lose detections and reacquire them. Filters designed to reduce clutter may also affect how movement appears over time. Consequently, an unusual track may reflect a combination of object behaviour, sensor limitations and processing assumptions. How platform motion changes the picture

One of the most significant sources of apparent anomalous motion is parallax. Parallax occurs when the observer moves relative to objects at different distances. Nearby objects seem to shift rapidly against distant backgrounds, creating an illusion of high speed.

AARO has published detailed explanations showing how parallax and forced perspective can cause observers to overestimate the size, speed or manoeuvrability of an object. According to the office, these effects frequently account for reports describing extremely fast movement that initially appeared extraordinary. [AARO]aaro.milAAROEffect of Forced Perspective and Parallax View on UAP…Under these conditions, an observer can misinterpret the apparent size and s…

The effect becomes especially powerful when:

  • The observing aircraft is moving quickly.
  • The target’s range is uncertain.
  • The background is very distant.
  • The display offers limited depth information.
  • The camera is zoomed or stabilised. [AARO]aaro.milResourcesEffect of Forced Perspective and Parallax View on UAP Observations · Correlations of Starlink Satellite Flaring with UAP Observa…

In these situations, a relatively slow object can appear to cross large distances at remarkable speed.

A concrete example: the “Go Fast” lesson

One of the best-known UAP videos released by the US military became famous because the tracked object appeared to skim rapidly above the ocean. Later analyses by government investigators concluded that the dramatic apparent speed was largely a consequence of viewing geometry and parallax rather than evidence of extraordinary performance. AARO has publicly cited the case as an example of how sensor perspective can create misleading impressions. Space [PBS]pbs.org3 ways scientists use math to help debunk UFO videosNASA and the US government have turned to math and science publicly to help show how…

The significance of this case is not that observers were careless. Rather, it demonstrates how difficult motion estimation becomes when a fast-moving aircraft, a distant target and a narrow-field sensor are combined.

Why unusual motion often looks more convincing on screen

Human perception evolved to judge motion in ordinary environments. Sensor displays operate differently. They often remove contextual information while magnifying movement.

Several display characteristics can make a track seem more dramatic:

  • Stabilised imagery causes backgrounds to behave differently from normal vision.
  • Zoom levels compress depth cues.
  • Infrared imagery highlights temperature differences rather than familiar visual shapes.
  • Target boxes and tracking markers create a strong impression that a precise measurement is being shown even when uncertainty remains.
  • Video clips often omit the broader operational context available to the original crew. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportThe study of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) presents a unique scientific opportunity tha…

As a result, later viewers may become even more confident about apparent motion than the operators who first observed it.

When a genuine anomaly remains

Not every unresolved case is explained by display effects. Some reports remain unidentified because available data are incomplete rather than because a specific mundane explanation has been proven. AARO’s public case archive includes examples where an object is assessed as physically present but cannot be conclusively identified with the information available. [AARO]aaro.milOfficial UAP ImageryAAROUAP ImageryIn 2023, the United States Africa Command submitted a report of an unidentified anomalous phenomenon to the All-domain Ano…

This distinction matters. A mistaken motion cue can explain why an object seemed extraordinarily fast without necessarily identifying the object itself. Resolving apparent performance and resolving identity are separate analytical tasks.

Why expertise helps but does not settle identity

Experienced operators provide some of the most valuable UFO and UAP reports because they know what ordinary traffic, weather effects and sensor behaviour typically look like. Their expertise often identifies cases worthy of further investigation. However, expertise cannot automatically supply information that the sensor never measured. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportThe study of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) presents a unique scientific opportunity tha…

Modern investigations increasingly focus on reconstructing the entire observation geometry rather than relying solely on the initial impression. Analysts seek multiple sensors, calibrated data, accurate timestamps, platform position, environmental information and full metadata. NASA’s UAP study emphasised that such contextual information is essential for distinguishing genuine anomalies from artefacts of observation. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportThe study of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) presents a unique scientific opportunity tha…

For the study of IFOs, the key lesson is straightforward: an expert operator’s report deserves attention, but a surprising display cue is only the beginning of an identification process. The more a display compresses distance, angle and motion into a simplified picture, the greater the risk that an apparently extraordinary manoeuvre is actually a consequence of how the scene was viewed rather than how the object moved.
