Introduction
Many night-time UFO reports begin with a bright white light that appears to hang motionless in the sky. In a significant number of cases near airports, the object later resolves into an ordinary aircraft on final approach. The effect is created by a combination of geometry and lighting: an aircraft flying almost directly towards an observer shows very little sideways movement, while its forward-facing landing lights remain pointed at the viewer. The result can be a brilliant, apparently stationary light that seems too bright, too steady, or too isolated to be an aeroplane. Only when the aircraft changes angle, draws much closer, or reveals its navigation lights does its true identity become obvious. Landing lights are among the brightest lights carried by aircraft. Their purpose is not merely to illuminate the runway during landing; they are also intended to make aircraft conspicuous to other pilots and help prevent collisions. From a distance, these lights can overwhelm other visual information. The fuselage, wings, and tail may be invisible against a dark sky. Even the aircraft’s red and green navigation lights can be difficult to distinguish when a powerful white landing light is aimed almost directly at the observer. Atmospheric conditions often strengthen the illusion. Haze, humidity, thin cloud, or airborne particles can scatter the beam, creating a glowing halo that makes the light appear larger and less aircraft-like. The observer sees brightness but receives few clues about size, distance, or speed.
How final approach changes bearing and brightness
The key mechanism is that aircraft on final approach are intentionally flying a long, straight path aligned with the runway centreline. If an observer happens to be located near that approach axis, the aircraft’s bearing changes very slowly even though its distance is rapidly decreasing.
Human vision is far better at detecting sideways movement than motion directly towards the observer. An aircraft closing the distance by several kilometres may appear almost fixed against the background because its image barely shifts across the observer’s field of view. The brightness of the light, however, does change. As the aircraft approaches, the landing lights generally appear more intense. Witnesses sometimes interpret this as an object becoming energised, enlarging, or moving towards them in an unusual manner. In reality, the increasing brightness is exactly what would be expected from a powerful light source approaching on a near-straight line.
A common sequence reported in UFO sightings is:
- A bright white light appears low in the sky.

Why the object can seem to hover
The apparent hovering effect is often strongest when the observer lacks useful reference points. Over dark countryside, water, or an urban horizon with scattered lights, it can be difficult to judge motion. Without visible wings, sound, or obvious motion, the brain may classify it as a hovering object rather than a rapidly approaching aeroplane.
This effect is particularly convincing because the light often remains visible for several minutes. Witnesses reasonably expect a fast-moving aircraft to cross the sky. Instead, the light seems to remain in one place, reinforcing the impression that it is stationary.
Clues that separate aircraft from unknown objects
Although the illusion can be persuasive, several indicators often reveal an approaching aircraft.
Brightness increases steadily. A head-on aircraft typically grows brighter as it closes range rather than maintaining a constant intensity.
Navigation lights eventually emerge. Red, green, and flashing anti-collision lights may become visible once the aircraft is closer or slightly off-axis. The object suddenly acquires shape. What looked like a glowing orb may abruptly become recognisable as wings and fuselage when the viewing angle changes.
The apparent hover ends near the observer. As the aircraft passes the constant-bearing phase, its motion across the sky becomes obvious and often appears surprisingly rapid.
Location matters. Reports occurring beneath known arrival routes or near major airports are especially consistent with this explanation.
Modern flight-tracking tools frequently allow witnesses to check whether an aircraft was on approach at the time of the observation, and many apparently mysterious lights have been matched to scheduled arrivals using this method.
Why this explanation appears so often in UFO reports
The landing-light illusion combines several factors that humans find difficult to judge accurately at night: distance, speed, direction, and brightness. Unlike many astronomical explanations, it can also produce a light that appears low in the sky, changes intensity, and seems to approach the observer.
Because aircraft are deliberately equipped with powerful forward-facing lights and routinely fly long straight-in approaches, they create exactly the sort of visual stimulus that people often describe as a hovering UFO. This does not explain every unidentified sighting, but it is one of the most common and well-understood mechanisms behind reports of bright, apparently stationary lights seen near airports after dark.
