Introduction
Flight tracking offers a practical way to test one of the simplest explanations for an apparently hovering light: a real aircraft approaching close to the witnesss line of sight. If the sighting time and viewing direction are known reasonably well, recorded aircraft positions can show whether an aeroplane was in the right part of the sky, moving on a trajectory that would have produced very little sideways motion from the witnesss perspective.
This is more informative than merely finding that a plane was nearby. A useful check reconstructs the geometry: the witnesss position, the aircrafts successive positions and altitude, and the resulting bearing and elevation as seen by that witness. A track whose calculated direction stays almost constant while its range falls is exactly what the hovering-aircraft hypothesis predicts. Conversely, a flight well away from the reported direction is a poor match. Flight data can therefore turn a subjective impression of hovering into a testable question about position and trajectory.[flightradar24.com]flightradar24.comAutomatic Dependent SurveillanceFlightradar24Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) | Flightradar24
Which witness details make a flight-data check possible?
The most valuable information is often mundane: where the witness was, when the sighting occurred and which way they were looking. Without those three elements, a flight-tracking search can produce numerous possible aircraft but little basis for deciding which, if any, corresponds to the light.
A useful sighting record should preserve, as accurately as possible:
- Location: preferably a map position or street-level location rather than just a town or county.
- Time: the beginning and end of the observation, including the time zone. Flight-data systems commonly use UTC, so an unnoticed time-zone or daylight-saving error can shift the search by an hour.
- Direction: an approximate compass bearing is ideal. A landmark such as above the church tower from my position can also allow the bearing to be reconstructed later.
- Elevation: whether the light was close to the horizon, perhaps 2030 degrees up, or nearly overhead can eliminate otherwise plausible aircraft.
- Duration and apparent movement: almost stationary for four minutes, then moved to the right is considerably more useful than simply hovered.
- Changes in appearance: increasing brightness, separation into several lights, appearance of red or green lights, or the eventual visibility of an aircraft silhouette can help test the identification.
Historical services can preserve enough positional information for this sort of reconstruction.[ADS-B Exchange]adsbexchange.comADS-B ExchangeOpen source on adsbexchange.com. says its historical archive contains aircraft positions and associated ADS-B, multilateration and Mode S parameters, with archived position data collected at five-second intervals since March 2020. Its public guidance also describes selecting previous flights and inspecting individual track points.[ADS-B Exchange]ADS-B ExchangeSample DataOpen source on adsbexchange.com.
[Flightradar24]flightradar24.comOpen source on flightradar24.com. likewise provides historical flight playback and a Global Playback function for examining aircraft activity in a particular area at a chosen date and time, although the depth of accessible history depends on the subscription level.[Support]SupportIs it possible to see playback of past flights?: Flightradar24 Support centerApril 10, 2026. https://support.fr24.com/support/solutions/articles/3000115499-is-it-possible-to-see-playback-of-past-flights-. The important point is to preserve the observation independently before searching. If someone first looks at a tracker and then reconstructs the remembered direction or time around a candidate flight, the apparent agreement is much less persuasive.
How track data tests the hovering geometry
A flight tracker does not record whether an aircraft looked stationary. It records information from which that appearance can be tested. ADS-B-equipped aircraft broadcast data that can include position, altitude, speed and other flight parameters; tracking networks combine successive reports into a trajectory. Some services also derive positions from multilateration, or MLAT, for aircraft that do not broadcast their own GPS position.[faa.gov]Federal Aviation AdministrationADS-B FAQ | Federal Aviation AdministrationMarch 3, 2025. https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/technology/adsb/faq. For a hovering-light investigation, the key operation is to convert that trajectory into the view from the witness.
Suppose an aircraft is 35 kilometres away at the start of an observation. A minute later it is substantially closer, but because it has been flying nearly towards the observer, its direction has shifted only slightly. On a conventional overhead map the aircraft has plainly travelled kilometres. From the witnesss position, however, most of that displacement has occurred along the viewing direction rather than across it.
The investigator can test this by taking successive recorded aircraft positions and calculating three quantities relative to the witness:
- Bearing the compass direction towards the aircraft.
- Elevation angle how high above the local horizon it should appear.
- Range the distance between observer and aircraft.
The strongest geometric signature of an apparently hovering approach is a substantial reduction in range accompanied by only a small change in bearing. If the aircraft is also descending towards an airport or following an arrival route, the track gains further contextual plausibility.
This is why simply watching the aircraft icon move across a flight-tracking map can be misleading. The map is an overhead representation centred on geography, whereas the witness experienced an angular view from one particular point. A flight may cover a conspicuous distance on the map while shifting remarkably little in the witnesss field of view.
A more rigorous reconstruction can project every recorded track point into that field of view. With an accurately timed photograph or video, investigators can go further and compare the predicted azimuth and elevation with the objects position relative to landmarks or stars. ADS-B has even been used in scientific UAP-related work as an independent positional reference: Galileo Project researchers have used aircraft ADS-B positions in calibrating an all-sky infrared camera system, while a separate published UAP case study combined ADS-B flight information with other positional data to reconstruct what observers aboard aircraft should have been able to see.[arXiv]arxiv.orgarXiv Commissioning An All-Sky Infrared Camera Array for Detection Of Airborne ObjectsarXivCommissioning An All-Sky Infrared Camera Array for Detection Of Airborne ObjectsNovember 12, 2024
A real match needs more than proximity
The distinction between aircraft in the area and a genuine geometric match is important. Busy airspace may contain dozens of aircraft within tens of kilometres. Finding one on a tracking website therefore proves little unless its position and movement correspond to the observation.
A good candidate should survive several checks at once. At the reported time, it should lie near the witnesss stated bearing and elevation. Its calculated angular motion should resemble the reported slow drift or apparent stationarity. Its trajectory should remain compatible for the duration of the observation rather than merely crossing the relevant direction for a few seconds. If the witness later reports the object beginning to move sideways, the predicted track should ideally reproduce that change too.
The method becomes particularly powerful when the geometry produces a distinctive sequence. An aircraft might initially remain near one bearing while approaching, then turn onto another leg or pass the observer and suddenly acquire obvious lateral movement. If the witness independently reported the same transition at approximately the same time, the agreement is substantially more informative than a single coincident position.
Official UAP case work demonstrates the broader value of this kind of positional correlation. In its Western United States case, the US Department of Defenses[All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office]aaro.milAARO HomeAll-domain Anomaly Resolution Office Search * Home * About * Mission/Vision * Leaders * UAP Cases * Official UAP Imagery * UAP Case Resolution Reports * UAP Reporting Trends * UAP Records * Congres…. https://www.aaro.mil/. Source panel: Citations. Accessed August 8, 2026Open source on aaro.mil. concluded that reported lights strongly correlated with specific commercial aircraft travelling established routes, some as far as 300 nautical miles from the observing platform. AARO said analysis showed that the objects were considerably farther away than observers had initially estimated, and that air-traffic-control data supported the commercial-aircraft identification.[AARO]aaro.milUNCLASSIFIEDAAROUNCLASSIFIED
Another AARO investigation of supposed atmospheric wakes compared aircraft location information with observed objects. One object closely matched the track of a military aircraft, while another case was identified with high confidence as a particular Airbus A380 using commercial flight data; photogrammetry produced a size estimate consistent with that aircraft.[AARO]aaro.milCase Resolution of 'Atmospheric WakesCase Resolution of 'Atmospheric Wakes
These cases are not specifically demonstrations of a ground witness mistaking a head-on landing light for a hovering aircraft. They are valuable here for a narrower methodological reason: they show how apparently anomalous imagery can be tested by asking whether its observed direction and behaviour correlate with independently recorded aircraft trajectories.
What a missing aircraft does and does not mean
The reverse test requires more caution. A convincing matching track can provide strong positive evidence for an aircraft explanation. Failure to find a flight on one public tracking service does not provide equally strong evidence that no aircraft was present.
Public flight-tracking maps are not complete replicas of air-traffic-control surveillance. Their coverage depends on aircraft equipment, receiver distribution, altitude, terrain, data sources and service policies.
ADS-B works particularly well when an equipped aircraft is within reception range of ground receivers. At lower altitude, however, radio line of sight becomes more restrictive. Flightradar24 explains that its MLAT system commonly needs reception by at least three receivers and that aircraft can disappear from its public display when they descend below the altitude at which enough receivers can hear them. It explicitly warns that this does not mean air-traffic controllers have lost the aircraft.[Flightradar24]flightradar24.comMultilateration (MLAT) | Flightradar24Flightradar24Multilateration (MLAT) | Flightradar24
Tracking systems also use different sources. Flightradar24 combines terrestrial and satellite ADS-B with MLAT and, in some regions, radar and other surveillance feeds. The OpenSky Network notes that conventional crowdsourced terrestrial ADS-B coverage has historically been weaker over oceans and remote regions, which is one reason additional satellite-derived tracking sources are useful.[Flightradar24]flightradar24.comHow Flightradar24 works | Flightradar24How Flightradar24 works | Flightradar24
Nor is every aircraft necessarily visible on every consumer service.[FlightAware]flightaware.comOpen source on flightaware.com. states that sensitive flights and some private aircraft can be unavailable through its public tracking system because of laws, regulations or privacy arrangements.[FlightAware]flightaware.comFlight Aware Frequently Asked QuestionsFlight Aware Frequently Asked Questions
This creates an important asymmetry in UAP investigation:
A precise positional match can strongly support an aircraft identification; an empty public flight-tracker screen cannot, by itself, rule aircraft out.
Where the negative finding matters, investigators should therefore check more than one data source and ask whether coverage was adequate at the relevant altitude and location. Independent ADS-B archives, MLAT records, official air-traffic information and locally recorded receiver data can sometimes fill gaps in a commercial tracker.
How strong is a flight-data match?
The most useful way to interpret the result is as a scale of evidential strength rather than a binary plane/no plane test.
A weak match might consist only of an aircraft being somewhere in the same general area. In busy airspace that may be little more than coincidence.
A moderate match places the aircraft close to the reported direction at the correct time, with a trajectory capable of producing slow apparent movement.
A strong match reproduces several independent features: correct time, bearing and elevation; decreasing range with very little bearing change; the reported duration; and a later change in direction or appearance that corresponds to the aircrafts recorded manoeuvre. Photographs, video or fixed landmarks can make the comparison stronger still.
Even then, wording matters. Flight data establish that a known aircraft occupied a particular trajectory. They do not directly establish what photons reached the witnesss eyes or exactly how the witness perceived them. A conclusion such as the recorded aircraft provides a close positional and temporal match to the reported light is therefore preferable to claiming certainty solely because an icon appears nearby on a map.
The converse is equally important. A missing match may leave the sighting unexplained, but unexplained is a statement about available evidence, not a description of the objects nature. NASAs UAP work has repeatedly emphasised the difficulty created by sparse observations, incomplete metadata and insufficiently calibrated data. Better timestamps, positions and sensor information make ordinary explanations easier to test and genuinely unresolved observations easier to recognise.[NASA Science]NASA ScienceUAPOpen source on nasa.gov.
Flight checks turn hovering into a testable claim
For an aircraft that appears motionless because it is approaching close to the line of sight, historical flight data provide an unusually direct test. The question is not simply whether an aeroplane was flying nearby. It is whether a recorded aircraft occupied the right direction at the right time and followed the right geometry to create the observation.
When the reconstructed bearing hardly changes while the aircraft closes the distance, flight tracking supplies an objective mechanism for the witnesss impression of hovering. If the track later predicts the same sideways departure or change in appearance that the witness described, the identification becomes more persuasive.
But the method works best in one direction: a good trajectory match is meaningful evidence, while failure to find an aircraft on a consumer tracking site is much less decisive. Coverage gaps, low altitude, differing surveillance technologies and restrictions on displayed flights all have to be considered. Used with those limitations in mind, flight-track reconstruction is one of the clearest ways to test whether an apparently stationary UFO or UAP light was actually an ordinary aircraft moving rapidly almost straight towards the observer.
