Introduction
Several drones flying together can produce one of the more convincing modern “UFO” impressions: a line, triangle, V-shape or compact cluster of lights that appears to belong to a single large craft. The effect does not require speculative technology. Coordinated drone systems already place hundreds or thousands of illuminated aircraft into precisely controlled geometric patterns, while much smaller groups can maintain formations for ordinary operational purposes. That distinction matters when assessing UFO/UAP reports. Three lights maintaining apparently rigid triangular spacing do not, by themselves, demonstrate a triangular vehicle connecting them. They establish three visible light sources whose distances and three-dimensional arrangement may be poorly constrained. Real-world drone operations show that multiple aircraft can be coordinated closely enough to make the alternative explanation physically credible; perception and viewing geometry can then make a formation look more rigid, larger or stranger than it really is.

Modern multi-drone flight is capable of far more coordination than is obvious when looking at a handful of lights in a dark sky. Purpose-built light-show drones effectively function as independently positioned illuminated pixels. The scale already demonstrated publicly makes a three-, five- or ten-light formation technologically unremarkable. At the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, 1,218 Shooting Star drones were flown simultaneously to produce recognisable moving figures and the Olympic rings. Later that year, 2,018 drones flew together over Folsom, California. Current systems can achieve still tighter positioning. Drone-show operator Firefly says its show aircraft use real-time kinematic satellite positioning, or RTK, with correction data distributed across the fleet to obtain centimetre-level positioning and maintain tight formations. Recent robotics research likewise treats large drone displays as a problem of assigning individual aircraft to precise positions while calculating collision-free paths between successive formations. For UFO interpretation, the important point is not that a mysterious triangle must therefore be a commercial drone show. Most unidentified sightings plainly are not choreographed entertainment. The demonstrations establish a narrower fact: separate small aircraft can hold geometrically organised positions and move together closely enough to create the visual impression of a coherent aerial structure.
A few illuminated drones could consequently reproduce several commonly reported configurations:
- A straight line: aircraft maintain similar headings with approximately equal spacing.
- A triangle: three visible drones occupy the vertices while the dark space between them is interpreted as the body of an object.
- A V or chevron: several drones are staggered around a common direction of travel.
- A compact cluster: drones at different ranges or altitudes project into a much tighter apparent group from one viewing position.
- A changing “craft”: drones alter their relative positions, causing the apparent outline to stretch, rotate, split or reorganise even though each light belongs to a separate aircraft.
This is particularly significant at night because the eye may have little evidence that the dark area between lights is empty. The perceived object can become the shape implied by the lights, rather than the collection of small vehicles actually producing them.
Why precise spacing can look like one solid object
Perspective collapses a three-dimensional arrangement into the two-dimensional angular pattern seen by an observer or camera. Two drones do not have to be physically side by side to appear so; one may be substantially farther away. Likewise, three aircraft at different ranges and heights can temporarily project into an apparently clean triangle.
That ambiguity becomes much harder to resolve when only lights are visible. A witness ordinarily cannot obtain physical dimensions from angular separation alone. Suppose three lights span several degrees of sky: without knowing their distance, that angle cannot establish whether they mark a modest formation of nearby drones or the corners of an enormous distant object. Motion can reinforce the illusion. If three lights preserve similar angular spacing while crossing the observer’s field of view, the visual system has a plausible reason to group them. The result can resemble navigation lights fixed to one dark vehicle. But formation flight produces much the same observational signature: independent aircraft following coordinated paths.
This gives investigators an important distinction to test. Constant angular spacing is not the same thing as evidence of a connecting structure. Stronger evidence for one physical object would include a consistently resolved silhouette, occultation of background stars, radar or other ranging data showing the lights at the same distance, or imagery resolving a continuous body between them. Conversely, visible changes in relative spacing, individual lights departing independently, or measurements placing the lights at different ranges would favour a multiple-object interpretation.
The viewing location matters as well. A formation that appears beautifully symmetric from one direction can look elongated or disordered from another. That is why videos taken from substantially separated positions can be disproportionately valuable: they can reveal parallax — the change in apparent position caused by observing the same objects from different locations — and help reconstruct whether the lights occupy one plane, one distance, or several independent positions.
Real operations show that multi-drone incidents can persist
Large entertainment displays prove what coordinated systems can achieve under controlled conditions, but prolonged real-world incidents demonstrate a different point: multiple drones can also operate repeatedly in the same area without forming an advertised spectacle.
In December 2023, Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia experienced repeated incursions by unauthorised unmanned aerial systems. Official accounts later confirmed that the number of aircraft fluctuated and that multiple incursions occurred during the month. That episode should not be stretched beyond the evidence: identifying objects as UAS does not establish who operated them, what every individual sighting represented, or that they deliberately attempted to resemble UFOs. Its relevance here is operational. A prolonged series of observations involving multiple small aircraft is not inherently implausible simply because maintaining repeated nighttime activity sounds too complicated for ordinary drones.
The much more public New Jersey sighting wave of late 2024 illustrates the additional difficulty created when genuine drone activity, ordinary aircraft and ambiguous observations become mixed together. On 3 December, the FBI said witnesses had reported a cluster of apparent drones and a possible fixed-wing aircraft along the Raritan River. Nine days later, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security cautioned that many submitted images appeared instead to show lawfully operating manned aircraft and that electronic detection had not corroborated the reported visual sightings then under review.[FBI]fbi.govnewark seeks information on drone sightingsnewark seeks information on drone sightings
By 17 December, the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, Federal Aviation Administration and Department of Defense said more than 5,000 tips had produced roughly 100 investigative leads. Their assessment was not that every report had one explanation: the observations included lawful commercial, hobbyist and law-enforcement drones, manned aeroplanes, helicopters and stars mistakenly reported as drones. This is a useful caution for formation sightings. A group of lights reported as “drones” does not automatically prove that all of them really are drones, just as a group reported as a “UFO” does not prove that the lights belong to one craft. In a busy night sky, several independent categories can overlap in the same account.
Coordination is possible without a pilot for every light
One intuitive objection to the multi-drone explanation is that keeping numerous aircraft in precise formation would require an implausibly large team of expert pilots. Existing technology shows why that assumption is outdated.
The FAA’s rules actually recognise the possibility of one remote pilot operating multiple small unmanned aircraft: doing so under US Part 107 requires a waiver from the normal rule governing operation of multiple small UAS. Automation makes much larger fleets possible. In light shows, individual flight paths can be computed in advance and executed as a synchronised programme rather than being manually flown second by second. This changes what should count as “too coordinated to be drones”. Smooth collective movement, equal-looking spacing or simultaneous changes of direction may be striking, but none is beyond demonstrated multi-drone capability. The evidential question is therefore not whether drones could possibly produce an organised pattern. They clearly can. The useful questions are whether drones fit the particular incident’s duration, altitude, speed, lighting, sound, airspace, weather and recorded trajectories — and whether independent observations reveal several aircraft rather than one.
What makes a formation sighting genuinely harder to explain
A drone-formation hypothesis is strongest when the observation consists mainly of unresolved lights moving at plausible low-altitude aircraft speeds, especially when the lights change their spacing or separate independently. It becomes weaker when good-quality evidence establishes behaviour incompatible with the performance or geometry of the proposed drones.
The distinction is important because nighttime videos often contain far less information than witnesses understandably feel they contain. A sharp triangle of three lights may look structurally meaningful while providing no direct image of a triangular structure. Conversely, investigators should not dismiss a report merely because “three drones could make a triangle”. That is a hypothesis to test, not an identification.
Useful discriminating evidence includes simultaneous views from separated locations, original video files with timestamps and metadata, known camera direction and field of view, radar or other range measurements, flight-tracking information where applicable, and long recordings that capture how the formation arrives, changes and departs. Those data can turn an impressive visual pattern into measurable trajectories.
The broader lesson for UFO/UAP analysis is therefore modest but important. Geometry alone is weak evidence for a single structured craft. Multiple drones have demonstrably reached a level of coordination at which lines, rings, figures and intricate three-dimensional formations can be deliberately produced, while ordinary perspective can make a much smaller group appear rigid and unified.[Intel Corporation]intc.comOpen source on intc.com.
When several lights appear to outline one enormous dark object, the first analytical task is to establish whether there is actually an object between those lights. Until independent range, imaging or other sensor evidence answers that question, a formation of separate drones remains a technically established — and sometimes visually convincing — alternative.
