Introduction

Double glazing can turn one ordinary light into two or more apparently separate lights. The effect occurs because an insulated window contains several partially reflective glass surfaces. Light from a lamp or other bright source on the observer’s side can reflect from more than one of those surfaces, and the resulting images need not fall in exactly the same place. Viewed against a dark sky, the duplicates can resemble a pair or formation of luminous objects rather than a window reflection.

This is not merely a theoretical possibility. Optical researchers use these displaced duplicates — usually called ghosting — as a measurable signature of reflections in photographs taken through glass. For UFO or UAP investigation, that gives an important diagnostic clue: several lights with nearly identical shapes and spacing do not necessarily require several objects in the sky. Sometimes the apparent formation begins with a single source in the room.

How several panes make several images

Glass is transparent, but it is not perfectly non-reflective. At an uncoated air-glass boundary, roughly 4 per cent of normally incident visible light is reflected; the exact amount depends on factors including refractive index, wavelength, coatings and viewing angle. The important point is not simply that double glazing reflects more light. It is that reflections arising at physically separated surfaces can follow slightly different paths to the observer or camera.

A 2015 computer-vision study by YiChang Shih, Dilip Krishnan, Frédo Durand and William Freeman described this effect explicitly. In a double-pane window, the pane nearer the camera produces one reflected image while the other pane produces another, shifted image. That work is particularly useful for understanding mysterious-light photographs because it treats the duplication as information rather than random photographic noise. If an indoor light is reflected into a photograph, the glazing itself can leave a characteristic structure: a brighter reflection accompanied by a displaced, often weaker copy.

The glass industry describes essentially the same phenomenon from a different perspective. Guidance on the visual quality of insulating glass units states that each pane can produce reflected images and that distortion or reflection effects multiply as panes are added. Triple glazing can enhance them further. Why the duplicates can resemble a UFO formation

The effect becomes especially deceptive when the reflected source is compact and bright. A ceiling spotlight, reading lamp or other small illuminated fitting does not necessarily produce an obvious picture of a lamp in the glass. Against a nearly black exterior it may contribute only its brightest feature: a dot, oval, short luminous bar or disc-like patch.

Instead of thinking “one lamp plus its ghost”, an observer who does not realise that glass is involved may see “two identical lights”. Add further reflections, or additional bright sources in the room, and the result can become a line, pair or small cluster that appears organised. Oblique viewing makes the effect still more useful diagnostically. When the observer looks through glazing at an angle, rays reflected from separated surfaces can reach the camera along measurably displaced paths. The duplicates also need not have precisely equal brightness. Every additional reflection or transmission through glass changes the amount of light reaching the camera. Consequently, a pattern containing one strong “object” and one weaker companion can still originate from a single source. Nor should an investigator expect perfectly regular geometry in every real window. Insulating glass units can flex because of temperature and atmospheric-pressure differences, changing the reflected image. The Glass and Glazing Federation’s visual-quality guidance also notes that multiple panes multiply reflection and distortion effects. The Loch Ness photograph shows the mechanism in practice

A useful UFO-related example emerged in Scotland in 2015, when a holiday photograph overlooking Loch Ness appeared to contain two luminous, elongated objects in the sky. The value of this case is not simply that somebody proposed “reflection” as an alternative explanation. The location allowed the hypothesis to be tested.

West identified the viewpoint as Bunloit Farmhouse and contacted the property owner. The owner confirmed that the relevant windows were double glazed. She then photographed the view again from the corresponding indoor position while deliberately producing a reflection from the room light. The resulting photographs reproduced the characteristic shape, colour and doubled appearance of the supposed objects. There was a dispute over the circumstances: the original witnesses maintained that their photograph had been taken outside, whereas the reflection analysis placed the camera indoors. Contemporary coverage recorded that disagreement. The case therefore illustrates a broader investigative lesson. A photograph containing two anomalous objects can initially seem harder to explain than one: two similar objects suggest formation flying, coordination or a common aircraft design. With double glazing, however, similarity between the objects can point in exactly the opposite direction. The second object may be evidence that the first is a reflection too.

Reflection patterns investigators can compare

Double-glazing ghosting has several features that can be checked against an unexplained photograph. None is decisive by itself, but several occurring together can make the reflection hypothesis substantially stronger.

  • Near-identical shapes. Two lights derived from the same source should reproduce much of the same structure. A peculiar oval, bar or irregular bright patch appearing twice is therefore more informative than two unrelated points.
  • Systematic displacement. The copies are normally offset rather than randomly scattered.   • Unequal intensity. One copy may be fainter because the optical paths involve different combinations of transmission and reflection.

  • Other reflected room details. Curtains, furniture, illuminated controls or faint interior shapes elsewhere in the frame can establish that the window was acting as a partial mirror.   • Repeatability. If the original location is accessible, placing a bright source on the camera side of the same glazing and changing the camera angle can be more persuasive than arguing from appearance alone. Movement provides another potentially strong test when video is available. A genuine distant formation has to maintain its geometry according to the motion of objects in three-dimensional space. Reflections are tied instead to the geometry connecting the source, panes and camera. Moving the camera sideways or changing its angle can therefore shift the ghosts in ways characteristic of the window rather than the distant landscape.

This is closely related to why ghosting is useful in computational photography. The 2015 CVPR research could distinguish the unwanted reflection layer partly because its duplicated structure behaved differently from the scene transmitted through the glass. When duplication is strong evidence — and when it is not

Finding two similar lights does not automatically prove double glazing. Aircraft can genuinely fly in formation, distant lamps can resemble one another, and other optical systems can also generate duplicate images. The stronger conclusion comes from matching several independent features at once: confirmation that the photograph was taken through multi-pane glazing; a plausible bright source on the observer’s side; duplicates with corresponding shape and brightness structure; displacement compatible with the window geometry; and, ideally, reproduction of the effect from the original viewpoint.

Conversely, if no glass intervened between observer and sky, this particular explanation fails. The same applies if reconstructed reflections cannot reproduce the reported geometry or if independent observers outside the building recorded the same lights from different positions. “Double glazing” should therefore be a testable hypothesis, not a generic label applied to every mysterious cluster.

What makes the mechanism especially valuable in UFO and UAP analysis is that the very feature that initially seems extraordinary — several matching lights appearing together — can provide the clue to a mundane origin. Modern insulated glazing contains multiple partially reflective surfaces, glazing standards acknowledge the resulting multiple images, and computer-vision researchers can mathematically exploit their characteristic displacement.
