How Starlink Recreated a Pilots' 2022 UFO Sighting
Researchers combined satellite orbits and aircraft tracking to reproduce a 2022 pilot sighting with a recently launched Starlink group.

Introduction
On 10 August 2022, five pilots aboard two commercial airliners over the North Pacific reported an unusual luminous phenomenon that initially resisted ordinary identification. The sighting was unusually useful for investigation because it did not rest on memory alone: one crew obtained two mobile-phone photographs and a short video, while aircraft tracking records fixed the observing platform in space and time. Researchers later reconstructed the event using those flight records and orbital data for 52 Starlink satellites launched only hours earlier. That makes the case particularly instructive among identified flying object (IFO) explanations. Instead of merely arguing that the lights “looked like Starlink”, investigators could ask a much stronger question: were specific satellites actually where the pilots were looking at the precise times recorded by the photographs?
What the pilots reported seeing
The incident involved two Air Canada flights travelling towards Vancouver on broadly the same North Pacific route. The leading aircraft was AC536, flying from Maui to Vancouver; the other was AC34, travelling from Sydney to Vancouver. The two pilots aboard the trailing aircraft initially saw four or five extremely bright, unresolved points resembling stars. They reported that individual objects briefly became brighter than the International Space Station before fading. Because they initially interpreted the lights as atmospheric objects at roughly aircraft altitude, their estimated distance of 35–75 nautical miles was necessarily dependent on that assumption rather than on an independent range measurement. That apparent object seemed to move ahead and roughly parallel to the flight path. It subsequently became visible to pilots aboard AC536 farther along the route. From that aircraft it appeared as an elongated or “cigar-shaped” object near the horizon and was seen moving through a large apparent angle across the pilots’ field of view. Crucially, one of the AC536 pilots recorded it. Two photographs were timestamped 11:39:08 UTC and 11:39:24 UTC, with an approximately 16-second video taken between them. The absence of an aircraft-radar return did not establish that the lights were exotic. The case study notes that the airliners’ onboard radar was configured primarily as forward-looking weather radar, whereas the visually observed phenomenon was at a large angle from the aircraft heading. Nor did the pilots possess a measured distance to the lights. A Starlink launch provided a testable candidate
The timing supplied an unusually specific candidate. At 02:14:40 UTC on 10 August — about nine and a half hours before the photographs — a Falcon 9 had lifted off from Kennedy Space Center carrying 52 Starlink satellites on the Group 4-26 mission. That mattered because the satellites had not yet dispersed into their eventual operational configuration. They remained a recently deployed train sharing closely related orbital trajectories. If Group 4-26 caused the sighting, its orbital position could in principle be propagated forward to 11:39 UTC and compared with the pilots’ actual viewpoint.
There was an important technical complication. Newly launched satellites can be difficult to reconstruct from ordinary public catalogues immediately after deployment because their individual orbits are still being established and catalogued. The researchers therefore used supplemental two-line elements (TLEs) for Group 4-26. A TLE is a compact set of orbital parameters from which a satellite’s position can be propagated to another time using an appropriate orbital model. The investigators then combined that orbital information with a second independent dataset: the aircraft’s own trajectory.
How the satellite and aircraft tracks were reconstructed
Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast, or ADS-B, records supplied the position and altitude history of AC536. The researchers concentrated their detailed simulation on this aircraft because it was the flight from which the timestamped photographs had been taken. This distinction is central to the evidential value of the case. The satellite calculation was not performed from a generic observer somewhere over the Pacific. The investigators placed the observer at the tracked location of the aircraft and propagated the Group 4-26 satellites to the exact UTC timestamps recorded in the image metadata. Several modelling and visualisation methods were used. Satellite Orbit Analysis Program (SOAP) and Systems Tool Kit (STK) simulations reproduced the satellite train from the aircraft perspective, while further calculations transformed orbital coordinates into cockpit-relative look and elevation angles. The resulting reconstruction placed the 52-satellite train near Gemini, matching the relevant region of the pilots’ sky. At the time of the second photograph, the simulated train lay almost on top of Castor, one of Gemini’s prominent stars. The authors also tested whether uncertainty in the airliner’s reported barometric altitude could materially shift the result. Adding about 2,500 feet, or 0.8 kilometres, to the aircraft altitude produced negligible change in the apparent satellite position because the satellites were vastly farther away. The 16-second interval supplied a motion test
The two photographs provided more than two snapshots. Because their timestamps were separated by 16 seconds, they allowed investigators to compare the object’s measured angular displacement with the displacement predicted for Group 4-26.
From the reconstruction, the satellite train travelled approximately 3.7 degrees across the pilots’ apparent sky during those 16 seconds. The model predicted a tangential angular velocity of about 0.23 degrees per second. That agreement is more discriminating than a simple resemblance between a photograph and a satellite train. Many objects can appear as an elongated patch of light in a low-quality night photograph. Far fewer candidates will simultaneously occupy the correct sky position from a moving aircraft and move across that sky at approximately the measured rate during a precisely timestamped interval.
The background stars strengthened the test further. The authors transformed the positions of prominent Gemini stars into the same aircraft-relative coordinate system used for the satellites. Plots made for both photograph times showed the calculated train in the corresponding region of the stellar background. Sunlight explains why the train looked extraordinary
Correct position and motion would not by themselves explain why professional pilots found the object so striking. The illumination geometry supplied another part of the answer.
At the time of the photographs, AC536 remained on the night side of the day-night boundary, while the much higher satellite train was exposed to sunlight. The reconstruction placed Group 4-26 roughly 1,620 kilometres from the aircraft as it crossed the day-night terminator. Starlink spacecraft can also produce strong specular reflections — concentrated reflections occurring when the Sun, a reflective spacecraft surface and the observer briefly line up at favourable angles. This illumination behaviour also helps reconcile the two crews’ somewhat different descriptions. The trailing crew initially saw several very bright star-like points, whereas the leading crew photographed the later elongated formation. The researchers noted that the integrated brightness of the photographed elongated object was considerably lower than that of the four or five brilliant objects initially reported from the trailing aircraft. Why the geometry supports Starlink
No single feature establishes the identification by itself. The strength of the case comes from several constraints converging on the same recently launched satellite group.
The timing fits. The identification should nevertheless be described with the level of certainty used by the investigators themselves. Their discussion says the analysis “strongly suggests” that the object was the recently launched Starlink group, rather than claiming that every physical property of every individual satellite was directly measured. Those limitations do not erase the positional result. They mainly affect the finer question of exactly how bright each spacecraft should have appeared at each moment. The case for Group 4-26 rests primarily on the convergence of independent orbital, aircraft, timing, celestial-position and illumination evidence.
From an unusual report to an identified event
The 10 August 2022 sighting illustrates why some apparently extraordinary aviation UAP reports can become much less mysterious once investigators recover enough metadata. Five professional pilots seeing the phenomenon is valuable corroboration that something genuinely visible was present, but multiple witnesses alone cannot determine what that something was. The photographs supplied seconds-level timing. ADS-B supplied the observer’s moving position. Supplemental orbital elements supplied the candidate satellites’ trajectories. Background stars supplied a fixed angular reference. Solar geometry supplied a reason those satellites could be conspicuous from an aircraft flying in darkness. Together, those data turned a report of a seemingly craft-like UAP into a falsifiable reconstruction.
That is what makes this 2022 pilot case especially useful within the wider problem of Starlink-generated UFO reports. The identification did not depend principally on witness credibility, nor on dismissing the pilots because their initial interpretation was mistaken.
