Can a flight tracker explain the sighting?
Public flight tracks can identify many strange lights, but gaps in coverage mean a non-match is not proof of anomaly.

Introduction
One of the most useful checks in a UFO investigation is to compare the reported object with aircraft flight data. Modern flight-tracking services can often identify lights that initially appear unusual, especially at night when navigation lights, landing lights and distant aircraft can create misleading impressions. However, a flight-track match is evidence, not proof, and a failure to find a match is not proof of anomaly. Public tracking systems have coverage limits, filtering rules and data gaps that can leave real aircraft absent from the display. [Flightradar24]flightradar24.comFlightradar24How Flightradar24 worksTracking data on Flightradar24 comes primarily from Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B…
The key question is not simply whether a flight appeared on a tracker. It is whether the aircraft’s position, direction, lighting and timing fit what the witness actually saw.
What aircraft tracking can and cannot show
Flight-tracking websites typically rely on Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B), a system in which aircraft broadcast their position, altitude and other information. This technology provides excellent coverage for many commercial flights and is often the quickest way to test a sighting against ordinary air traffic. [Federal Aviation Administration]faa.govins outsFederal Aviation AdministrationIns and Outs7 Feb 2023 — ADS-B Out works by broadcasting information about an aircraft's GPS location, alt…
Yet public trackers do not provide a complete picture of everything in the sky. Several limitations matter when evaluating a UFO report:
- Some aircraft do not transmit the full ADS-B data used by public trackers.
- Some aircraft are tracked through secondary methods such as multilateration (MLAT), which depends on receiver coverage and may not work everywhere.
- Low-altitude flights can disappear from public coverage because of terrain, distance from receivers or network limitations.
- Certain military, government or privacy-sensitive aircraft may be hidden or partially restricted on some tracking platforms. A common mistake is to treat a tracker as though it were identical to air-traffic-control radar. It is not. Air traffic controllers may have access to information that never appears on consumer websites, while different tracking platforms can show different aircraft because they use different data sources and display policies. [Flightradar24]flightradar24.comFlightradar24Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B)ADS-B enables aircraft to broadcast their position, altitude, speed, and… [ADSB Exchange]globe.adsbexchange.comadsbexchange.comADS-B Exchange - track aircraft liveADS-B Exchange - track aircraft live - aircraft flight history…
For that reason, “nothing appeared on Flightradar24” is a weak argument by itself. It is a useful observation, but not a definitive conclusion.
Matching bearing, timing, lights and motion
A convincing aircraft identification requires more than finding a nearby flight on a map. The geometry must fit the sighting.
The strongest matches compare several independent features at once:
- Timing: Was the aircraft present at the reported minute, not merely on the same evening?
- Bearing: Was it actually in the direction the witness described?
- Movement: Did the apparent path match the reported motion?
- Brightness changes: Did the aircraft’s orientation explain sudden brightening or fading?
- Lighting pattern: Were blinking anti-collision lights, navigation lights or landing lights visible?
This last point is especially important. Aircraft approaching almost directly toward an observer can appear nearly stationary for several minutes while their landing lights grow brighter. Witnesses sometimes describe this as a hovering object because lateral movement is difficult to perceive when the aircraft is flying along the observer’s line of sight.
Similarly, an aircraft turning toward or away from the observer can seem to accelerate, stop or suddenly change brightness without performing any unusual manoeuvre. A good flight-track comparison therefore reconstructs the viewing geometry rather than merely plotting dots on a map.
A useful rule is that the more independent details a flight explains, the stronger the identification becomes. A match in location alone is weak. A match in location, timing, direction, duration and light behaviour is much stronger.
Why a non-match is not evidence of anomaly
Many UFO discussions make an unwarranted leap: if a flight tracker shows no aircraft, the sighting is treated as unexplained. This is a classic overclaim.
Several ordinary reasons can produce a non-match:
Coverage gaps
Public tracking networks rely heavily on ground receivers. Coverage quality varies by region, altitude and terrain. Aircraft flying low or operating in poorly covered areas may not appear consistently, even when they are physically present. Incomplete aircraft visibility
Not every aircraft broadcasts the same information. Some older aircraft, specialised aircraft and certain military operations may not appear in the same way as a routine airline flight. Public services themselves acknowledge that some aircraft require alternative tracking methods and that some may not be displayed at all. [Flightradar24]flightradar24.comWhat's this plane doing?Answering recent frequently…10 Apr 2020 — Operators of private or sensitive aircraft may request their tracking details be restricted…
Filtering and privacy programmes
Some aircraft operators seek restrictions on how flight information is displayed publicly. The FAA operates privacy programmes intended to reduce the public visibility of eligible aircraft, and some commercial tracking platforms honour such restrictions. Platform differences
A flight absent from one service may appear on another. Some platforms filter data, some rely on different receiver networks, and some display more raw information than others. Comparing multiple sources often reveals aircraft that a single tracker misses. [ADSB Exchange]globe.adsbexchange.comadsbexchange.comADS-B Exchange - track aircraft liveADS-B Exchange - track aircraft live - aircraft flight history… [2Flightradar24]
These limitations do not mean that every unidentified light was an aircraft. They simply mean that a negative tracker result has limited evidential value on its own.
A cautious standard for evaluating sightings
When flight data and the sighting align closely, aircraft become a strong conventional explanation. When no match is found, the correct conclusion is usually narrower: no matching aircraft was found in the available tracking data.
That distinction matters. A positive match can strengthen an identification. A negative search usually cannot establish anomaly by itself.
In UFO investigations, flight trackers are best treated as powerful but incomplete datasets. They can resolve many reports, but they cannot certify that every untracked light was something extraordinary. The most reliable approach is to combine flight data with witness timing, viewing direction, apparent motion and lighting behaviour, while recognising the limits of what public tracking systems can actually see.
