Introduction
One reason Starlink satellite sightings generate so many UFO reports is that they look unusually organised. Shortly after launch, dozens of satellites can appear as a perfectly ordered line of bright points moving together across the sky. To an observer unfamiliar with satellite deployments, the formation can resemble a coordinated fleet rather than separate spacecraft. The effect is real, but it is a temporary stage in how the satellites are deployed and moved into their operational positions. What creates the train effect after launch?
A Starlink train is not a deliberate sky display. It is a consequence of how SpaceX deploys satellites from a single launch vehicle.
When a Falcon 9 rocket releases a batch of Starlink satellites, they begin their journey in very similar orbits and at relatively small distances from one another. Why the spacing feels unnatural to witnesses
The human brain is highly sensitive to patterns. A row of evenly spaced lights moving silently across the night sky looks intentional because almost nothing else visible overhead behaves that way.

These characteristics can make the formation seem more coordinated than it actually is. Witnesses often interpret the line as evidence of controlled formation flying, whereas the satellites are simply sharing a similar orbit after deployment.
Another psychological factor is scale. Because there are few distance references in the night sky, observers may unconsciously imagine the lights as much closer than they really are. A formation hundreds of kilometres above Earth can therefore be perceived as a nearby group of objects travelling together. That perceived proximity makes the regular spacing appear even more remarkable.
How the train changes as satellites spread out
The organised appearance is temporary because the satellites are not meant to remain in a train.
After deployment, Starlink spacecraft enter an orbital-raising phase. During this period they use onboard propulsion to climb from their initial insertion orbit toward their operational altitude, which is typically around 550 kilometres for current-generation satellites. As they do so, engineers intentionally allow the satellites to drift relative to one another so they can occupy different positions around their orbital plane.
