Introduction

Many UFO or UAP cases remain unresolved for a simple reason: investigators do not have enough information to test ordinary explanations. A witness may be sincere, a photograph may be genuine, and a video may show something unusual, yet the report can still be impossible to identify if key details were never recorded. NASA’s independent UAP study concluded that the biggest obstacle to understanding many sightings is not necessarily the object itself but the lack of high-quality data, calibration information, and metadata surrounding the observation. Missing metadata illustration 1 In the context of identified flying objects (IFOs), metadata is often what transforms a mystery into a solvable case. Without precise timing, location, viewing direction, sensor settings, weather conditions, and other contextual information, investigators cannot reliably compare a sighting against aircraft, satellites, balloons, drones, astronomical objects, or atmospheric phenomena. As a result, many cases stay in the category of “unidentified” even when a conventional explanation may exist. What metadata means in a UFO report

Metadata is the information about an observation rather than the observation itself. A photograph is evidence, but metadata explains when, where, and how that photograph was taken.

For a UAP investigation, useful metadata commonly includes:

  • Exact date and time of the observation.
  • Observer location and movement. [aaro.mil]aaro.milAAROAbout the PhenomenonAbout the Observer. ▫ Observer's date, time, location, and travel path for first and last observation of the UAP…
  • Direction of view and elevation angle.
  • Camera or sensor type.
  • Lens settings, zoom level, exposure, and field of view.
  • Weather, cloud cover, visibility, and wind conditions.
  • Duration of the event.
  • Presence of nearby aircraft, satellites, drones, or launches.
  • Whether radar, infrared, visual, or other sensors were involved.
  • Original image or video files rather than compressed copies. AARO [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportSeptember 13, 2023 — Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) are one of our planet's greatest mys…Published: September 13, 2023

A useful way to think about metadata is that it provides the missing dimensions of a sighting. A bright light in the sky means very little by itself. A bright light observed at a known azimuth and elevation from a known location at a known time can be checked against astronomical databases, aircraft records, satellite passes, and weather information.

How missing context blocks ordinary explanations

Distance cannot be estimated

One of the biggest problems in UFO investigations is determining how far away an object was.

A witness usually sees only an angle in the sky, not a distance. Without additional measurements, investigators may have no way to tell whether an object was:

  • A drone a few hundred metres away.
  • An aircraft several kilometres away.
  • A satellite hundreds of kilometres above Earth.
  • A bright planet effectively at an astronomical distance.

Because size and speed calculations depend on distance, uncertainty in range can create dramatic but misleading impressions. A small nearby object can appear to move extraordinarily fast, while a distant object can seem enormous. NASA’s report emphasised that many UAP observations lack the multiple measurements needed to determine basic physical characteristics reliably. [NASA]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportSeptember 13, 2023 — Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) are one of our planet's greatest mys…Published: September 13, 2023

Apparent motion can be misread

A common source of confusion is relative motion.

When observers move in a car, aircraft, or ship, stationary or slow-moving objects can appear to accelerate, follow, or manoeuvre. Camera movement can create similar effects in video footage. Without records of observer position, heading, speed, and camera orientation, investigators cannot reconstruct the geometry of the event. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportSeptember 13, 2023 — Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) are one of our planet's greatest mys…Published: September 13, 2023

This means a report that seems to show extraordinary movement may simply lack the information required to separate object motion from observer motion.

Sensor artefacts become impossible to evaluate

Modern UAP reports increasingly involve cameras, infrared systems, radar, and other sensors. Yet a sensor’s output is meaningful only when investigators understand how the instrument was operating.

NASA noted that many UAP observations originate from systems that were not designed for scientific measurement of unidentified objects. Poor calibration, incomplete sensor information, and missing operational details can make ordinary artefacts appear mysterious. For example:

  • Infrared glare can distort apparent shapes.
  • Digital zoom can exaggerate movement.
  • Compression artefacts can create unusual visual effects.
  • Radar returns may require technical context to interpret correctly.

Without metadata describing the sensor and its settings, investigators may be unable to distinguish a genuine object from an instrument effect.

Weather explanations cannot be tested

Many reports involve lights, reflections, clouds, atmospheric optics, or weather-related phenomena.

However, weather explanations require weather data. If a report lacks the exact time and location of the sighting, investigators may not be able to reconstruct:

  • Cloud layers.
  • Wind direction and speed.
  • Temperature inversions.
  • Atmospheric visibility.
  • Astronomical viewing conditions.

A sighting that appears inexplicable may simply lack the contextual information needed to compare it with local environmental conditions. [AARO]aaro.milThe reporting form is intended as an initial point of contact…Read more…

Why unresolved does not mean extraordinary

A frequent misunderstanding in UFO discussions is treating “unidentified” as evidence for an exotic explanation.

In practice, unidentified often means only that the available information is insufficient. NASA’s study repeatedly stressed that the absence of adequate data prevents reliable conclusions. A case can remain unresolved because investigators cannot rule out ordinary causes, not because those causes have been disproven. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportSeptember 13, 2023 — Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) are one of our planet's greatest mys…Published: September 13, 2023

This distinction matters. Consider two different situations:

  • A case with extensive metadata, multiple sensors, calibrated measurements, and no satisfactory explanation after analysis.
  • A blurry image with no timestamp, uncertain location, and unknown camera settings.

Both may be labelled “unidentified”, but they are not equally mysterious. The first represents a genuine analytical challenge. The second represents an information gap.

The category “unresolved” therefore contains a mixture of genuinely puzzling events and reports that simply lack enough evidence for identification.

Missing metadata illustration 3

A simple example of how metadata solves a case

Imagine a witness reports a bright object moving slowly across the western sky.

Without metadata, investigators know only that a light was observed.

Now add:

  • Exact timestamp.
  • GPS location.
  • Viewing direction.
  • Elevation angle.
  • Original phone image with embedded data.

Investigators can immediately compare the report against satellite databases, aircraft tracking services, astronomical positions, and weather records. What was previously a mystery may quickly match a satellite flare, a landing aircraft, a bright planet, or a high-altitude balloon.

The unusual appearance has not changed. Only the information surrounding the observation has changed.

This is the central mechanism behind many UFO identifications: context often provides the answer.

What a stronger sighting record would include

NASA’s recommendations and subsequent discussions within the UAP research community have consistently pointed toward more systematic reporting standards. The goal is not to prove unusual claims but to collect information that allows ordinary explanations to be tested properly. A stronger sighting record would ideally include:

  • Precise time synchronised to a standard clock.
  • Accurate geographical coordinates.
  • Direction and elevation measurements.
  • Original sensor files with preserved metadata.
  • Information about the recording equipment.
  • Weather and environmental data.
  • Multiple observers where possible.

Why metadata is often the difference between an IFO and a UFO

The distinction between an identified flying object and an unidentified one is frequently not the object itself but the quality of the accompanying information.

A balloon photographed with complete timing, location, and environmental data can usually be identified. The same balloon photographed without context may remain permanently unexplained. NASA’s UAP study framed this as a scientific data problem: observations lacking calibration, multiple measurements, and thorough metadata cannot easily be analysed, regardless of how intriguing they appear. [NASA Science]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportSeptember 13, 2023 — Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) are one of our planet's greatest mys…Published: September 13, 2023 [NASA]science.nasa.govNASA ScienceIndependent Study Team ReportSeptember 13, 2023 — Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) are one of our planet's greatest mys…Published: September 13, 2023

For that reason, many UFO mysteries persist not because investigators have exhausted every explanation, but because the information needed to test those explanations was never recorded in the first place. When metadata is missing, uncertainty survives. When metadata is present, many apparent mysteries become ordinary, identifiable events.
