Introduction

A sensor recording can establish that something physical was present without revealing what that thing actually was. This is one of the most easily misunderstood outcomes in UFO and UAP investigations. Many people assume that once an object appears on radar, infrared imagery, electro-optical footage or another military sensor, its identity should be straightforward. In practice, the opposite is often true. A sensor may confirm that an object existed while leaving critical questions—such as range, size, altitude, origin or type—unanswered.

A case can satisfy the first requirement while failing the second. In those situations, the object remains unidentified not because investigators think it is imaginary, but because the available data do not support a reliable attribution. [AARO]

One of the most important findings from recent official UAP reviews is that “unidentified” does not automatically imply extraordinary behaviour. Some unresolved cases involve objects that appear entirely ordinary in their motion and appearance.

A notable example is AARO’s publicly released Europe 2024 case. The office assessed with high confidence that the infrared footage showed a physical object. At the same time, AARO stated that the object’s morphology, performance characteristics and behaviour were unremarkable and that the available information was insufficient for conclusive attribution. The result was neither a sensor artefact nor a solved identification. It occupied a middle category: a real but unknown object. This distinction matters because discussions of UFO reports often collapse several different questions into one:

  • Was anything actually there?
  • Did the sensor capture a genuine object rather than a processing artefact?
  • Can the object’s characteristics be measured reliably?
  • Is there enough information to identify it?

A positive answer to the first two questions does not guarantee positive answers to the last two.

How analysts separate artefact from object

Before attempting identification, analysts first ask whether a recording represents a genuine external target.

This stage focuses on corroboration rather than interpretation. Investigators look for signs that an apparent object was interacting with the sensor as a real target would. Depending on the system involved, evidence can include:

  • Consistent tracking across multiple frames.
  • Motion that remains coherent despite changes in sensor orientation.
  • Detection by more than one instrument.
  • Agreement between independent data streams.
  • Characteristics incompatible with known camera artefacts.

The process is especially important because many famous UAP videos have ultimately been explained through sensor geometry, image-processing effects or viewing-angle issues rather than unusual objects. AARO has released examples where reconstruction of platform position and sensor look angles substantially changed the interpretation of apparent motion. In some cases, objects initially perceived as exhibiting extraordinary behaviour were later found to be moving in ordinary ways once geometry was reconstructed. When a target survives these checks, analysts may conclude that a physical object was present even if they still cannot determine what it was.

Why unremarkable behaviour may still be unidentified

Readers often expect unidentified cases to involve dramatic manoeuvres or impossible performance. In reality, identification frequently fails because of missing context rather than extraordinary behaviour.

Several common information gaps can prevent attribution:

Unknown range. A small nearby object and a large distant object can produce similar images. Without reliable range data, size and speed estimates may vary enormously.

Limited resolution. Infrared and tracking systems are often designed to maintain a lock on a target rather than provide detailed visual identification. An object may occupy only a few pixels.

Lack of comparison data. Weather information, air-traffic records, drone activity, balloon launches or other contextual information may be unavailable or incomplete.

Single-sensor observations. One sensor can indicate presence without providing enough independent measurements to reconstruct the object’s true characteristics.

NASA’s independent UAP study highlighted these exact problems, noting that many reports suffer from poor sensor calibration, insufficient metadata, a lack of multiple measurements and inadequate baseline information. The result is an important but often overlooked category of case: a mundane-looking object that remains unidentified because the evidence is incomplete.

What extra data would close the gap

Most unresolved sensor cases are not mysteries because investigators lack theories. They remain unresolved because they lack measurements.

The kinds of information most likely to convert an unidentified object into an identified one include:

Independent range measurements

Range is often the missing variable that unlocks the rest of the problem. Once distance is known, analysts can estimate size, speed and altitude far more accurately.

A radar return associated with optical or infrared imagery can dramatically narrow the range of possible explanations. Without it, apparent performance can be highly ambiguous. Multiple sensor types

A target recorded simultaneously by infrared, visible-light cameras, radar and environmental sensors provides a much stronger evidential package than a single video clip.

Modern scientific UAP-monitoring proposals increasingly emphasise multimodal observation precisely because different sensors compensate for one another’s weaknesses.   • Camera zoom levels.
  • Environmental conditions.

What this category means within UFO reporting

For the broader question of identified flying objects (IFOs) and UFO reports, this category occupies an important middle ground.

Not every unresolved sensor recording is a sensor error. Equally, not every unresolved sensor recording demonstrates unusual technology. Official investigations increasingly recognise a separate class of cases in which the available evidence supports the existence of a physical object but does not support a definitive identification.
