Introduction
Many night-time UFO “orbs” are not objects that naturally appear as glowing spheres. They are ordinary point-like lights—stars, planets, aircraft lights, drones, satellites or distant ground lights—that have been enlarged and blurred by the camera. When a camera fails to focus accurately on a tiny light source, the light is no longer recorded as a point. Instead, it spreads into a soft disc that can look surprisingly large, structured and mysterious. Combined with digital zoom, automatic exposure adjustments and image stabilisation, a simple light can appear to pulse, change shape or drift in ways that seem unusual even though the source itself is behaving normally. This effect is one of the most common reasons why short night videos produce apparent UFO “orbs”. How Point Lights Become Blurred Discs
A distant star or aircraft light is effectively a point source. When a camera lens is focused correctly, that point remains tiny on the image sensor. When focus is missed, the light spreads into what photographers call a “circle of confusion”, creating the familiar out-of-focus disc often known as bokeh. This transformation is more dramatic at night because the light source is bright while the surrounding sky is dark. The result is a glowing circle with soft edges that can appear much larger than the actual object.
Several features of these discs are commonly mistaken for unusual characteristics:
- Apparent size: The orb can seem far larger than any visible star or aircraft light.
- Internal patterns: Optical imperfections, aperture shapes and image processing can create rings, bright centres or textured patterns inside the blur. [Wikipedia]WikipediaCircle of confusionCircle of confusion
- Changing shape: Small focus adjustments cause the disc to expand, shrink or alter appearance.
- Colour shifts: Different wavelengths may blur slightly differently, producing red, green or blue fringes around the orb. [Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
Because viewers expect a distant object to remain a point of light, the enlarged disc is often interpreted as evidence that the object itself is spherical or glowing.
Why Zoom Makes the Effect Worse
Many UFO recordings begin when someone notices a small light and immediately uses maximum zoom. Unfortunately, digital zoom enlarges both the subject and any focusing errors.
A star that occupies only a tiny fraction of a pixel in a wide shot can become a large shimmering blob after aggressive zooming. Digital sharpening and noise reduction may then invent additional detail that appears meaningful even though it comes from image processing rather than the object itself. This is one reason why videos of Venus, Jupiter and bright stars are frequently circulated online as mysterious glowing orbs. Why Phones Struggle With Dark Skies
Modern phones are excellent general-purpose cameras, but night-sky imaging pushes them into a difficult operating environment.
Autofocus systems depend on contrast. In daylight, a camera can easily detect edges and textures. Against a dark sky, a single bright point provides little information. The camera may repeatedly hunt for focus or lock onto the wrong distance. Astrophotographers commonly use manual focus because autofocus often struggles with stars and other faint celestial targets. At the same time, phones are attempting to solve several problems at once:
- Increasing brightness through computational photography.
- Reducing image noise.
- Stabilising a handheld shot.
- Maintaining focus on a tiny moving target.
- Applying digital zoom. [facebook.com]facebook.comFacebookA strange orb reflecting bright light was filmed hovering in…Digital zoom, autofocus adjustments, and light diffraction can dr…
Each correction can subtly alter the appearance of the light. As the software adjusts exposure or focus, the orb may appear to brighten, dim, pulse or change size even when the source remains steady.
Why Orbs Seem To Pulse
Witnesses often describe UFO orbs as “breathing” or “pulsing”. In many cases, the apparent pulsation is created by the camera rather than the light source.
Minor autofocus corrections cause the blur disc to expand and contract. Automatic exposure systems simultaneously brighten and darken the image to maintain visibility. Atmospheric turbulence can also make distant lights shimmer. Together, these effects create the impression that the object is actively changing shape or emitting energy when the behaviour is largely a combination of optics and image processing. Why A Star Can Look Like A Moving Orb
A surprising feature of heavily zoomed night footage is that stationary objects often appear to move.
When recording at high magnification, tiny hand movements become dramatic. Image stabilisation software compensates by shifting the image frame. The orb may drift, wobble or zig-zag across the screen even though the original light is fixed in the sky.
This effect is especially misleading when the video contains no horizon, trees, buildings or other reference points. Without those references, viewers cannot tell whether the object moved or the camera moved. The resulting footage may show an apparently manoeuvring orb when the only motion occurred in the recording device.
Simple Checks Before Calling An Orb Unusual
Many orb videos can be evaluated with a few straightforward observations.
First, zoom out. If the orb shrinks back into a normal point of light when zoom is reduced, the apparent sphere may be a focus artefact rather than a physical object.
Second, watch for focus changes. If the orb grows and shrinks while remaining in the same general position, the camera may be hunting for focus. A true object changing size dramatically would normally show corresponding changes in distance or brightness.
Third, compare the orb with known celestial objects. Bright planets such as Venus and Jupiter are frequent sources of orb reports because they are bright enough to remain visible when badly out of focus.
Finally, look for context. A wider shot showing the horizon, nearby lights or aircraft traffic is often more useful than a tightly cropped close-up. Context helps distinguish between a distant light source and a genuinely unusual object.
What This Means For UFO Evidence
An out-of-focus orb is not evidence that nothing was present in the sky. There may indeed have been a star, aircraft, drone, satellite or other real object. The problem is that the recording no longer preserves enough visual information to identify it confidently.
In investigations of IFOs—identified flying objects—this distinction matters. The orb appearance often reflects camera behaviour more than object behaviour. Once a distant point source has been transformed into a large blur disc, details needed for identification are lost. The resulting video may be genuine, but the glowing sphere on screen is frequently an optical artefact created by focus errors, zoom and low-light imaging rather than the true shape of the object being observed.
