Setting Place, Date and Local Time
The accuracy of a Stellarium reconstruction depends almost entirely on the quality of the witness information. Before opening the software, gather the following details:
- Exact or approximate observation location.
- Date of the sighting.
- Local time.
- Duration of the observation.
- Direction of the object.
Once Stellarium is open, set the observer location first. Checking the Witness Direction
After entering the location and time, the next task is to face the same direction described in the report.
A witness may say the object appeared “in the west”, “above the trees”, or “over the town centre”. These descriptions can be translated into Stellarium’s horizon view. Rotating the simulated sky toward the reported direction often reveals whether a bright astronomical object occupied that position.
For greater precision, investigators can use altitude and azimuth coordinates. Azimuth describes compass direction along the horizon, while altitude measures height above the horizon. Recording Matches and Mismatches

If the reported object was overhead while the nearest bright planet was low on the horizon, or if no significant celestial object appears in the reconstructed sky, investigators should note the discrepancy and consider non-astronomical explanations rather than forcing a celestial identification.

- The witness direction.
